I've a Dual 1228, does i jump into a 1019?

Hello, i have just bought a Dual 1228 some month ago to set up a Vinyl system, a Sansui 6500, and klh 23's...all for my new home i'll moving in some months.

Today, i've seen a 1019, with dirt, but with health.

I don't know what to do, the man ask 100$ for it....

Can someone compare the 1228 and the 1019? despite the 78rpm ability?

Does it worth the pain to jump on it?

Thanks for your advice...

Fabian

I believe it is an upgrade. It is considered one of the three best Dual idler wheel TT's along with the 1219/1229. It does have a 10" platter, but it weighs around 6 pounds! - much heavier then the 1228. The arm was surprisingly capable and could track down to 1/2 gram. The motor was heavy duty and practically indestructible. Among the best built Duals ever.
Clean it up, relube according to the service manual available on Vinyl Engine, (Take your time- do it right or get it professionally serviced.) Get some Dynamat (or similar material for less money- Look in Home Depot/ Lowes with the roofing stuff) and apply it around the inner perimeter of the plinth. Put some cheap rubber pads (feet) available even from a store like Home Depot at each corner. Use "Deoxit" on all electrical audio contacts- headshell, RCA jacks, etc. Replace RCA cable w/ new, higher-quality one. Install decent cartridge.

You will have a VERY nice sounding turntable, you would have to spend several hundred $ plus for a better sounding modern turntable.

By the way, $100 is around top dollar for a 1019 right now unless it is in very good-excellent condition with dust cover, IMO. Offer him less, depending on condition. In this market I have been paying no more then $60- $80 for Dual 1019's that need nothing more then the usual cleaning/ lube/ adjusting.

Enjoy. Gary

Indeed, this in my opinion was Dual's finest turntable of all Duals.

I have 1 too and fully agree... and the platter is actually 7 pounds! Also, these do go way higher on ebay when they have the dust cover, plinth and the headshell w/ a good cart. Personally though, I think the ebay prices are greatly inflated.
