I was out at Gig Harbor audio earlier this week and I noticed Eric has a few reel to reel decks built by J-Corder. I had never seen one in person and I was impressed. I've been to the web site and drooled several times. I also found out J-Corder was a local company! Through a couple of phone call exchanges I was able to meet up with Jeff Jacobs today who owns and operates the company. He agreed to check out my Sony TC-880-2 and make sure it was all dialed in per specification. He also agreed to calibrate it to the new ATR tape which I want to start using.

Well I have to say this guy must be near the top of the audio geek pyramid. Mostly he is a Technics horder. I stopped counting at 40 Technics reel to reels not to mention dozens of other brands. He even has another perfect Sony TC-880-2 which is only the second one I've ever seen in person.

Right now he works out of his home but he will soon be opening a retail shop in Gig Harbor. He gave me a personal tour of his new shop and I was floored! He has a whole bunch of extremely rare items. Stacks and stacks of TOTL Technics equipment from back in the day. Every corner of that shop had obscure items that I mostly had never heard of or only seen pictures of. Really, really cool stuff!!!

If you have ever seen one of his maxed out decks, I think you could appreciate his workmanship...

Oh yeah, he seemed to be a great guy and dialed in my deck perfectly!

You know, I don't think I saw one TEAC but I bet he could. His shop was full of equipment of all kinds.
 
Jeff does not work on Teacs - his reason was that the brand was notorious for using cheap parts and would cost too much to bring back to life

OK, good to know. My A3300SX, built in the mid 70's is still functioning fine, but would like someone someday to deoxit the pots and upgrade the caps, do standard adjustments and lube the thing properly. I'm not sure if that will ever be a reality tho due to my location in rural Alaska. This deck is too heavy to ship via USPS but I do sometimes drive out to the Seattle area so a door to door delivery would have been possible, but not if he thinks what I have is junk and not worth the effort.

That is debatable...I have had 2 Technics 1500 decks in mint condition and 5 different Teac and Tascam R2Rs..IMHO I prefer the sound and general repair potential of the latter to the former. The Technics wins on the cool looking factor...but there is always the Ferrogragh model 7 or Otari 15!
 
From what I can tell he mostly does Technics. He is also fond of the little pioneer 707.

Look on tapeheads forums, there are a few techs there, you may find one close to you
 
I think it is about 50-50 over there at tapeheads when it comes to J-Corder.

Maybe. Maybe not. Those TH posts appear to fall into two camps: Those who have met or bought from him speak very highly of J-Corder. Those who have never dealt with him (or had a need to) seem to dislike J-Corder.
