'Ultra LP' Version Of Jack White's New Album Has Some Crazy Surprises

As White and Ben Blackwell of Third Man Records explain in this short video, the Lazaretto Ultra LP will run at three speeds. There's the standard 33 1/3 bulk of the album. But there's also a track hidden under the center label that plays at 78 RPM, and another that plays at 45 RPM. Yeah, there are bonus tracks hidden under both labels.

The album includes "dual-groove technology" which means you hear alternate versions of the album depending on where you drop the needle. The intro for the song "Just One Drink," for example, plays either an acoustic or an electric guitar —- they eventually merge into a single track. Side A plays from the inside out. In other words, you put the needle down near the center label and it moves out toward the record's outer edge and ends with a locked groove that loops over and over. The dead wax area of side A also includes a hand-etched floating hologram of a spinning angel.

I celebrate Jack's unabashed, unapologetic embrace of gimmickry for the vinyl lover. And this release has at least 8 gimmicks involved.

But - it's also mastered by Bob Ludwig, with no compression, and it's pure AAA, nothing digital in the process. All for 20 bucks? I salute you, Jack.:thmbsp: (I also dig your McIntosh rig)

I do appreciate that there are new releases coming out now but why are they so damn expensive?

Jack is probably doing more to keep alive the things about music you love and appreciate than you may realize. Be careful about lumping him in with a group you feel compelled to disparage

When I stopped buying LPs in the mid-to-late 80s, they were already at $12 for the mass-market schlock. $20 in 2014 doesn't seem like it's out of line. I can think of lots of things that have more than doubled in price between 1986 and now, so, if you think about it in modern terms, that's damned cheap.

If you think it's too expensive, go buy it on Apple's web site.
