Japanese Gear

My definition of High End is not these brands either and one must cherry pick the lines to get a few units. I expanded the definition to allow those 60 units in there. Been trying to get the High Performance Separates forum up and running but there is not one and well with the name of this forum it can get filled with all kinds of junk as it has. When the brands that we consider high end did finally show up in the mid-70s and later they were out of the budget of the folks here posting in most cases. They are within reach today and this is why I'd like to talk about them. But no, the name of this forum isn't bringing that discussion here. Folks own this stuff but I guess they are busy listening.

Hey man it's the only forum left since they took away Vintage Solid State on a website that's mostly about vintage gear so cut the guys some slack.It's probably the only place where we won't get berated by the modern camp,for liking our stuff,pretty sad.

From what I recall pioneers would always toast when driven hard. Marantz made some great stuff in the days but I didn't think they were Japanese owned till later. Most the good Fisher was also American made. Accuphase was always up their, and someone mentioned SAE, they were American made not Japanese until they got bought out, then went downhill. I liked the Yamaha gear.

All I know is when I was in junior high in the mid-70's, my buddies and I liked to read High Fidelity and Stereo Review in the school library, throw Julian Hirsch's name around, and act like we knew what we were talking about. Luxman was the brand I lusted after back in those days, but those $1000 amps and preamps may as well have cost a million when you're 15 y/o.
I've got several vintage Luxman pieces now, most have been fully restored, and I've not been disappointed by any means.

Agree with Luxman but as usual you need to pick and chose, another brand that never really made it to N.A. is Victor {other than its mid-line JVC models}
who for its 100 volt market, has some exceptional products. The issue though being availability.

I've never been too fussy about amplification, perhaps having had Yamaha gear throughout the years has eliminated the the need for fussiness.
Yamaha amp/preamp combos power my large Infinitys, JBLs, ADS, Quad ESLs,etc with audio aplomb.

I have a lot of respect for some Marantz gear. In the late 70's, they re-released the Model 9, a true masterpiece. Someday I hope to get my hands on a pair! I also love the stack systems some of the manufacturers made. A full rack of Pioneer Spec gear is pure goodness.
