Jazz on vinyl vs. CD

I gotta agree w/ Mr. Lin re: classical. I gravitate toward the CD/SACD format.

Used classical LPs are quite often too noisy. Other than classical LPs I picked up in college or "borrowed" from my dad's collection and never returned, a "DDD" recorded classical piece or an old mono recording on SACD can be a thing of beauty in the quiet passages.

I have a few (Bill Evans) Analogue Productions LPs that are tube cut and play wonderfully.

I get most of my albums from thrifts. There's something about flipping through LPs that's just more satisfying than scanning the CDs. It's just a more tactile medium, I guess. Besides not having eyestrain reading the titles with LPs.

Around here, LPs are usually $1-$2, and CDs are usually $3, so there's more of a "score" feeling when finding a Jazz classic on LP, especially when the vinyl itself is in great shape.

I was pretty happy yesterday, though, when I "scored" Kurt Elling's Man In The Air on CD at the GW!

I can understand the nostalgic aspect and the atmosphere of lps when playing period specific jazz, helps make you feel like you are in the Village Vanguard back in the day.

... and I also crank up my cigarette smoke generator and spray a little "Eau de Pee Pee" in the bathroom. Definitely helps the bohemian vibe.

In the past year, I think I bought about 100 jazz albums on vinyl and maybe one or two on CD.

I have to strongly agree with you on this one.

The sound stage is much deeper & wider on my system.


And, seems that way to me on many others too.
