JBL 100 vs EPI 200

Could somebody please compare these two speakers; JBL 100 and EPI 200. I have a JBL 100 but am considering buying an EPI 200 also for another room. I wonder what speaker people like the best and how would you compare their characteristics. Thanks so much.

The JBL is capable of moving more air, the EPI not so much.
To me, the JBL sounds more real, more like a live experience. It might be less accurate in reproducing waveforms but it sounds more alive.
My opinion only.

Your question assumes that there are folks out there who have owned both sets of speakers at the same time and thought to do an A/B comparison.

Or they at one point had one and then another at a different point and tried to remember what they liked/disliked between the 2.

Not too mention there are variables such as what amplification was used, room set up (sonics), listening levels, and types of music.

More then likely you will not get a first hand comparison just biased opinions on one or the other.

JBL = lively, exciting, direct

EPI = mellow, envelopping, feels like thru your bones. ( woaaa ! )

Again.. west coast render versus ( against ) east coast render ( read : punchy versus round )

JBL L100s are famous and prized but not a favorite of mine. They are vented 3 ways and very different from most EPIs. The best way I can think of to describe it is sort of a "pro audio" sound, like a better version of a PA at a club - sounds great cranked up. That is just my opinion - you have these, so no one can tell you how they sound.

The design goal for EPI 200s was accuracy on the cheap, and IMO mostly successful. They are 2 ways with matched drivers and have an uncolored sound that not too many others have no matter what coast they're from, but they do follow in the design tradition of other east coast companies like AR, KLH, Advent, etc.

They are both classics and for an audio hobbyist it is good to know what both speakers sound like. They really sound very different from each other. At a minimum, then you can participate in threads like this!
 
I have actually owned both types- at the same time.

I will say this- I have sold off all my L100s.

I have kept a set of EPI M150s, that I modded to be as close to like M200s, as possible, given where I have to use them (space constraints).

The EPI M200/200C is a VERY good speaker. Bass that goes nearly an octave lower than the L100s (the EPI 200 will make it into the low 20s, in fact), and much more linear frequency response and better off-axis dispersion.

That said- one would need to listen to both, to see if they prefer one or the other.

Just reread my post and realized I did not praise the EPIs enough. I have 100Vs in my living room right now and they are wonderful. Same drivers as the 200s without the PR.

Thanks, I know subjective evaluations are faulty under the best circumstances and it is very unlikely many people have owned or even listened to both. However there are some generalities most people agree to concerning speaker charactaristics which are useful and that was what I was looking for.
