JBL 2240 in custom cabs

Ethyl Mermans (JBL 2241H, JBL 2251J, Heil AMT with diffusion lens, custom crossovers with Audyn caps and core air core inductors). Woofer cabinet is ~7.5 cu ft internal volume. Crossover is at 225Hz/~3,500Hz. This takes care of the roughness >3K+ from the 2251J and provides a seamless transition to the Heil.

Mermans vs L300s on Youtube. A compressed track and the camera mic further compresses the bass. Is what it is for Youtube.

While we all know that the 2245 uses the foam edge and has the deepest bass extension, don't confuse the 2240, 2241, 2242. Of the three, the 2241H is the best suited to use as a true woofer rather than a PA quasi-woofer. It will go deeper, flatter, and can use a much greater range of cabinet sizes than the 2240 or 2242. While the 2242 is more efficient and goes louder, this additional volume is concentrated in the upper bass/lower midrange whereas the 2241 digs deeper.

And, don't think that the 2241H can't deliver the deep bass with a bit of eq. The cone has so much available movement, it is hard to bottom out before your ears do.

I spent a lot of time doing WinISD simulations before selecting the 2241Hs. Best of all, they never need refoaming.

I bought my pair of 2242 woofers in need of a recone, and had GordonW recone them with closer to 2245 specs except with cloth accordion surrounds.
I know, a sin a to recone JBL woofers with non original parts:)

Those Heils on top remind me so much of Cooler Master EVO Hyper 212 cpu coolers. LOL. Cool setup. The sound is quite balanced. OK, it seems like maybe the 2241s could make a decent project. Maybe I can talk the lads at the pawn shop into going half price on the 2241s again at $100 a pop. I missed the sale price by thinking too much.. or not enough. Whichever it was in this case. I have a bunch of LE-85s and 2405s. I would just need to snag an 8 or 10" pair to cover from 200hz to 1200hz or so plus or minus. It would be a fun 4-way theoretically in the right sized cab.

Maybe something like a ginormous Jubal sort of 3-way would work with these. Using the 2240/2241 18"ers, LE-8s and 2405/ 077s. Crossover points at 200hz and 8K. LE-8 looks useable up to 10K. And they are quite nice sounding. With the low cost of these 18"ers these could be real sleepers. Don't think they'll kick the 4333As to the curb any time soon though but I'm intrigued by the "lighter and tighter" claims of upper bass definition. I didn't even think about building a set of loudspeakers with the 2241H, I was only thinking subs at the time.

If you don't biamp, the LE8 may not have the effeciency to keep up with the 2241. You can add a parallel 20 ohm resistor to the 2241 to drop the impedience to ~5.7 ohms and reduce the volume by ~1-1.5 dB. I currently do this with the Ethel Mermans with the 2251Js (~9-3/4"), which I would think would be more effecient than the LE8s. Although you could use a series resistor to get more reduction, you wouldn't want to because you would loose dampening. You would want to consider this in your crossover design. The reduction in impedience raises the crossover frequency, and I've added an additional 100 mfd to the 62.3 mfd on the 2241 when using the 20 ohm resistor. I put these resistors and caps on dual banana plugs and I can simply plug them in to the woofer output terminal on the external passive crossovers essentially piggyback with the 2241s. The 100 mfd Audyn caps are too big to fit in the crossover cases. ;)

Also, some of the other JBL offerings of similar/slightly larger size have 3" or even 4" voice coils rather than 2" voice coils used in the LE8s.

Also, something else to consider. As of late, I've been running the Ethel Mermans as 2.5-ways. I've by-passed the high pass filter to the 2251Js letting it roll of naturally at the low end.

I did lots of experimentation, and using the 32.3 mfd high pass cap on the 2251, the difference was only an increase of about 1 dB at 40 Hz without using the cap. IOW, based on the natural impedience curve and roll off of the 2251J, the cap ain't doing squat to protect the driver at the low end.

It is however, throwing off/reducing the lower end of the 2251's natural curve yielding reduced volume in the lower midrange (~200-400 Hz) where it would be nice and flat to better meet the 2241.

There is a lot that goes into getting a crossover right.
