Jbl 4312a ...?!

Hi,

I have some questions:

- I have a pair of JBL 4312A studio monitors. I have seen, in some reviews, some complaints that the sound of these speakers are "boxy" and the boss is "boomy."
Does anybody agree with this?!

- I have never had a pair of L-100. Is the 4312A absolutely better that L-100?! (Since, L-100 was very popular in its days.)

- How well the sound of these speakers are when played along with a subwoofer?!

(I run these speakers with a Marantz 2330B receiver.)

Thanks,
Ramin

The bass response is West Coast boomy, yes. If you want to "fix" that, plug the ports with ZilchPlugz™....

I have never heard of "ZilchPlugz." Could you please explain what it is and what ot doeas? Thanks

I personally like the sound of these speakers very much. But, I see there are some limitation in its sound.

You will find ZilchPlugz™ in your local hardware store plumbing department disguised as plumbers' test plugs. Use them to seal the ports.

123/A/-x/2213/H are "closed-box" drivers, according to their T/S parameters. JBL intentionally used them in a "too small" vented alignment to produce artificially enhanced bass for use nearfield in freespace, which became a core element in "West Coast" sound once consumers discovered it.

Isn't the box design also a reason? (I see that the box is small for a speaker with this woofer size.)

So, the cross-overs are same in L-100 and 4312A?

I said the box was too small for that woofer vented.

The crossover topology is the same; the component values are different because the drivers are. The woofer runs full range in all but the earliest version....

Oh sorry!

Do you think a Pioneer HPM-100 would sound better than these?

We've discussed HPM-100 in other threads.

I have no opinion about which is "better."

[You want me kicked off AK, right...? ]

:D HPM-100 is actually a JBL speaker, manufactured by Pioneer!

One other question: Is there any difference between 4312A and 4312B?! :)

4312 Not "Boxy" to me

I have a pair of the 4312 A control monitors and they sound great. Very similar to the L100 Century, and not "boxy" at all to me.

Does anybody know the answer?!

No, the 'Control Monitors' are intentionally voiced more bass heavy, ala the L100, IIRC. Whereas the 'Studio Monitors' are voiced for an accurate, flat FR.

Search the google/AK archives or ping Zilch for more complete in-depth answers as to why.

Control monitors are voiced a little more bassy, since they're usually made to sit on top of a console (hence, 'control') when recording is taking place... they're out in open space, and therefore cannot get any "bass reinforcement" from a wall.

That said, if you put the 4312 on a stand, and place it a few feet out from a wall, you can duplicate the intended environment pretty well, and they balance out well.

And yes... the 4312 is much improved over the L100. If nothing else, the 4312 has a real tweeter (035Ti, as opposed to the severely limited LE25 cone tweeter in the L100 and 4311)...

Regards,
Gordon.
