Jbl 4312a ...?!

And yes... the 4312 is much improved over the L100. If nothing else, the 4312 has a real tweeter (035Ti, as opposed to the severely limited LE25 cone tweeter in the L100 and 4311)...

Regards,
Gordon.

I *think* that's only the 4312A that uses the 035Ti...could be wrong.

Thanks for all the info, friends. :)

I wish I had the 4410A model. But, I am still very happy with these 4312A's. I think the dry and accurate (and the same time, pleasant) sound of these control monitors, is a good match for the warm sound of my Marantz receiver! :thmbsp:

While I listen to my set-up playing music, all I hear is "the music" -- nothing less, nothing more! :scratch2:

Among these vintage speakers, I really love HPM-150 and these JBL control monitors.

For my Coltrane/Bach main genres suppose I'd go with 431x at 2*pi over HPM-100s at 4*pi.

For Zepp/Boston all bets are off. :smoke:

Can't really directly compare to 4312a since all I've heard is 4311b's. (The ones I'm listening to right now just have woofers, its mids and tweets are not connected since they're damaged. )

If the Control/WestCoast/bass emphasis is what HPM-100s do, I like my HPM-1500's better; more liters, less of a hump according to the graphs and its 15.75" woofer goes lower with less distortion... but to me the major difference is still the port in back (and 270 degree open top mount supertweeter).

Looking for: Pioneer SX-1980/1280; Pioneer HPM-150.

Although both are a step up from 100s, 1500s are better than 150s. Of course I like my 1250 better than 1980/1280 models, so you pays yer money and takes yer chances...

Oh man, you have to come and see what these tweeters do when I play Jethro Tull's "Budapest." Your brain bleeds!

Some of my amps sound just dandy with Ti or Aluminum tweets. The lesser ones...don't. I prefer my Luxman to a Marantz on metal domes; the difference is not subtle. Jethro Tull? on vinyl...please. Or I'll need a brick in my ears. :twak:

It should sound horrible with just the woofers! ... :sigh:

Yeah, 1500s look nicer too.

No, its a CD. The album is "Crest of a Knave." Some songs are just fillers, but there are some very good songs too, esp the song "Budapest."

Give it a try when you fix the tweeters and midranges of your JBL's. :D

I wish I had a turntable too. :scratch2:

Control monitors are voiced a little more bassy, since they're usually made to sit on top of a console (hence, 'control') when recording is taking place... they're out in open space, and therefore cannot get any "bass reinforcement" from a wall.

That said, if you put the 4312 on a stand, and place it a few feet out from a wall, you can duplicate the intended environment pretty well, and they balance out well.

I have a mint set of 4312s, is it possible to swap out the 035Tis for the stock LE25s without changing the crossovers?

Not sure about that but I have heard a lot people don't care for the titanium tweeters because of the ear bleeding highs. I guess it all depends on what equipment you are running them with. I like my 4312A's.

I have never heard of "ZilchPlugz." Could you please explain what it is and what ot doeas? Thanks

I personally like the sound of these speakers very much. But, I see there are some limitation in its sound.
ZilchPlugz installed. "CAUTION STAND CLEAR WHILE IN USE"

I listened and found that I did not care either way. And of course I could not put my red grills back on. This is in my listening space though. Very small room. 8X15 with the speakers on the long wall. I would definitely try it again after I finish the re cap job though.

Screw other opinions. They don’t matter. Do
You enjoy them? Make sure to use a quality power source. I’ve used Hafler Xl-280 with my JBL monitors since ‘87. I like using JBL monitors for two channel listening. I’ve a 4412,4425,4401 at this time. I’ve owned 4311b.4312 for many years.

Power amps with a high dampening really Control the big 12” woofers.
