JBL 4312's - $500

Here they are... the 4312's... Bought 15 years ago by the original owner. Teak wood. Excellent condition. He doesn't have the grilles for them. Would you say $500 is a decent price for these? Or can I find a teak pair with grilles for less? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

The speakers in question are teak VENEER. But the question was, are they worth that? I mean aside from lucking out at an estate sale or somewhere...

That was a mistype. They're in excellent condition... I checked them out, but he doesn't have the grilles to them. Not that I would use them with the grilles on, and not that the grilles can't be replaced...

Too much, IMO. Someone on Ebay might be asking that much, and somebody MIGHT pay that. $500 is pretty steep for some 4312s.

I would say max of 350 if they were cherry. *shrug*

Everyone keeps telling me $350 is right... Obviously Paybay and mostly CL isn't where I'm going to find them for that price, from what I keep seeing on both sites. I keep seeing $500 minimum everywhere. I'm guessing the only way to get them on CL for $350 is to check it every half hour for the next 2 years LOL and have cash in hand at all times ready to race over there. I heard the 4312's and some L100's a couple days ago, and fell in love. It's the sound that I've been looking for... At the same time, for $350, what's another $150?

If that is the sound you are looking for and you will be holding them for a few years...go for it. It is steep to me, but what the hell do I know. I paid $75 for my set of 4312's. Let's say you keep them two years and sell them for $350, you paid $150 for a lot of enjoyment (about $6/mo). A small price to pay for what you want, IMO. My guess if you keep them awhile, you will get what you paid. I never heard of teak veneered 4312's...

Uh, DQ-10s, Forte 2s, Vandy 2C or 2CI, or maybe even AR9s. Have owned them all and each sounds better than the 4312 IMO. If it`s the sound you`ve been seeking then go for it. Folks are insanely spending 8 bills+ on 601-llls on that auction site because they probaly think that`s the best.

Very good point! Maybe I'm too old for " the hustle ", LOL. My friend has a McIntosh receiver at his recording studio here in Studio City, ( what better city for a studio is there? ), and we're gonna hook up the JBL's to his McIntosh 4100 there tomorrow, so I can get a really good listen to them to see once and for all if they are the " ones. " I highly doubt the " teak veneer " part myself. Let's just call it " wood " veneer.

I'm a bit biased, I suppose. It's all a matter of how much a particular speaker is worth TO YOU. I wouldn't pay any more than 350 (probably wouldn't even pay that really) for a pair. Why, because I don't really want them. I'd rather have L112s or some monitors from the 44xx series any day and save my pennies for when they came up.

You may absolutely love them and never want to part with them, and at that point, who gives a **** what people on an internet audio forum say they're worth. If you have any intention of re-selling them and getting most or all of your money back, then I would say that $500 is top dollar for these speakers.

You just have to be patient for the deals to come up. AND you're in Cali, where there seems to be more JBLs and more deals than anywhere. Lots of folks and lots of speakers...

Different strokes for different folks.

Since you're getting the chance to audition them, bring along another pair of speakers for context and a bunch of different kinds of music. Milk the audition for all it's worth. $500 could be worth it if you love them, but since you won't be getting your money back, I'd make damn sure I liked them. I'm not opposed to paying top dollar rather than waiting it out. I just wish I would have better auditioned the speakers that I've bought in the past.

Hmm I'm with the others on the price, it seems a bit steep. I can snag some JBL 100's for 50 bucks here locally. I also have a love for Klipsch and would pay 500 for something in that brand line. However it goes to say what you hear is what can determine the value, we all hear different and if you love them it's worth the money. It just goes to show you that money and brand names are really not the make or break point for some, it comes down to the quality you "hear" and what suits "you". I love my Dynaco A-50's and wouldn't get rid of them, however some would say the Dynaco line is missing something and so on. Once you can determine what you really like "hearing wise" then go for the price aspect, do you see yourself spending 500 bucks on them? I personally like to find the deals around that are at garage sales, thrift stores, and so on. You can spend 500 bucks on alot of nice stuff if your willing to wait.

Just my .02 cents, I'll jump off the soap box now

Thanks to all for the input... Some would, some wouldn't... I value and respect all points made here. There's always a better deal to be had - this game can go on forever... And it is a game, that's all it is ( and my bank account, haha ). It's good to know that $500 is top dollar for the JBL's. There's a side of me that can't fathom paying $500 for second, third, or fourth - hand vintage ANYTHING, let alone an object that ( in many cases ) is used as frequently as stereo speakers, and there's the other side of me that doesn't care how much something costs if I " have to have it. " Thanks for everyone's input.
