Hello, My name is Rich Pabst. I just found your site and I think you folks can help me do some research on the JBL CF150. Does anyone know who made the tweeters for these speakers? The JBL part # is d025n55j1970.
As you all probably know there are "ABSOLUTELY NO" listed replacement tweeters or diaphragms for these speakers. I thought if anyone could tell me who made these tweets for JBL it would help me in my search to repair them.I'm an audiophile and just seem to like these speakers. Sure would like to repair them correctly.

Hi Rich, welcome to the forum. While I'm not familiar with this speaker, this article speculates that they're French-made, which should narrow it down somewhat. However, I don't know how much it will help you, since JBL is large enough to have the drivers custom made for themselves, and demand that they not be made for or sold to any third parties.

You might set up an automated search for the tweeters on eBay. Another alternative would be to have them repaired, although that can get expensive. Assuming you're in the US, one generally highly recommended source for speaker driver repair is Millersound.
 
Thank you so much for your help. I've been lookin forever on ebay w/ no results. Years ago I used to be able to buy diaphragms for these but no longer.I'll keep lookin and if you or anyone else comes up w/ anything I sure would appreciate any more advice ...Thanx again..........Rich
 
Just curious - have you blown these before? Because if so, either there's something wrong with your amp or you're trying to listen louder than these speakers are capable of. I've been into audio since the late 70s and have never blown a tweeter.
 
Yeah, I've blown them before. Once w/ a Crown tube amp and once w/ a Kenwood Basic M2A. You probably know the drill, a couple too many drinks, a couple too many turns of the volume knob, and hence a couple of blown tweeters. These speaks are known to blow tweets, but in the long run it's my own fault, or maybe Jim Beams!
 
Those look like a modder's dream. Available cheap on the used market, nice drivers, much in need of some refinement.

IMO, I would find a Vifa or similar tweeter from Parts Express that will fit the hole.

When the music gets screechy and hard sounding, it's a good indication that you are overdriving your amplifier.
 
The only difficulty with a non-OEM replacement is that these are pretty sensitive, 99dB IIRC from reading one of the sites I found. Although that might not be a bad thing to pursue if you can find a fit.
 
If the CF-150 really is 98dB efficient (o_O), it will take something like the Selenium ST200 to keep up with the other drivers. It should do a fine job taking the place of the original by simply padding it back some by either a fixed or variable L-pad (resistor). The FR graph on the ST200 looks wonderful, has great customer feedback, with the only complaints being toward the fragility of the frame and the need to seal it from the rear. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

You could look for a pair of tweets from a CF 120. I own a set of them. Identical to yours except for 12" woofer.
I think other CF series have the same tweeter. Check the Bay again you might find some.

I'm looking for your input as which if either of these tweets you folks think would be best or if you think something else would be better. The specs of these speakers are as follows. Neither of those tweeters is nearly sensitive enough to match your speakers. Is there a reason you don't want to go with the JBL Selenium drivers recommended earlier?
 
I didnt really want to screw around with the crossover or using an L-PAD. do you think that these would be "soft" enough with out an L-PAD ? Just by "plugging" them in?
 
Rich, I'm going to recommend that you register and post a message on the Parts Express Tech Talk forum, giving all the information you've given us here. The PE guys are experts and are familiar with all of their products, so they would be the best people to make a recommendation.

with some searching, I did find one tweeter that would probably work perfectly, the Peerless/Tymphani H25TG05-08; unfortunately it doesn't appear to be available anywhere.
