somebody gave me some JBL Control 5 Monitors. No sound from the low frequency driver on both. Speakers are in tact. No obvious tears, holes, etc. so does that mean a crossover replacement? I’m trying to figure out if they are worth any investment. Is this a major repair?. Or just toss them. The speakers look new by the way. Thanks in advance.

I haven't made a continuity checker since Vocational School in 1974. Nor do I have a voltage checker. I'm going to try to repair. What should I look for when pulled out? How can I tell if it's a bad crossover. These speakers look new. Could it be a blown fuse? What should I check with the voltage checker? I'm going to pick one up. Thanks...

Quickest would be to just remove the woofer and see if it works. Hook up some speaker wires to it and see if music plays through it. Or touch the + and - ends of a battery to the woofer terminals to see if the woofer moves.
If the bare naked woofer seems to work fine, it's probably a problem in the crossover. A failed component, a burnt trace or hopefully just a loose wire.

Hopefully it is something simple. They are well-built commercial speakers. Let's check out the tech sheet...

Looks like a pretty simple crossover that includes a light-bulb to provide some over-current protection. If you are lucky, the bulbs are bad and the woofers are good.
If the woofers are bad, you can get the proper JBL replacements.

If the woofers are bad, I would repair them because I am a JBL fan and I have a use for them but that is more than I would expect a non-JBL nut to spend.

A small battery, AA or AAA. Don't take it out to the garage and try it off the car battery.
First you check continuity of each driver after it's been disconnected from the crossover. 0 ohms means it's shorted out, infinite ohms means it's open. Both means dead, both can be repaired multiple ways depending on how much money, time, or money and time you want to put into them.
If both read from 2-8 ohms drivers are probably fine and the problem is in the crossover.

Seconded. It's fine for casual use such as this. Actually they sometimes have a coupon for a free DMM when you buy anything there; I've gotten quite a few over the last several years.
But yeah, a cheap DMM would answer this question very quickly.
