JBL D120F question

Slowly but surely....
I just picked up a pair of D120F's in homemade cabinets (apparently made to JBL suggested cab size - 30"Tx19"Wx14"D). I know D120F's are well known in Fender amps, but I was going try to use them as home speakers. I can't find any info on the frequency response for that woofer. I was going to use the crossover and the LE20 from my S99 cabinet, and I believe that crosses over at 2000Hz (which was a bit high for the LE14a.) I know Zilch will say that the LE20 is not a real tweeter, but I am not ready to go the waveguide route yet.. :) Any info on the D120F? Thanks.

It should go fairly high, the D130/D130F is rated to around 5-6KHz. I'm sure they'll sound fine as home hi-fi speakers, the D130F had a slightly larger voice coil gap than the D130 to make it a bit more resistant to abuse, and this is just the little brother of the line. I think the cones were the same as the "hi-fi" drivers.

I'm setting up a pair of D140Fs for my huge home speaker project.
 
While JBL ran the D130 up to 2500 Hz with the 075 tweeter and the D120 can easily go this high, I think that you'll find that the LE20 does not have the necessary sensitivity to be used with the D120.

While you can always turn a tweeter down relative to the woofer, very few turn the woofer down to compensate for the tweeter. It may work, especially if you don't put a low pass filter on the woofer, but it probably won't give you the desired benefit.

Thanks for the info on the LE20. Should the 075 be a good match then? The 075's are much harder to come by though.. :(

Yes, 075 would be a good match. Not harder to come by (actually maybe easier), just a little more $$$. :banana:

Hi Jim - I paid the asking price, and thought they were a pretty good deal. The cones were in great shape, but I haven't look behind the drivers to see if they have the number stamped on them, so not sure if they were reconed. I listened to them at the seller's place, and I didn't hear any vc rub, just that JBL bass. The pair of aluminum domes were bought from Orange County speakers awhile back that were never put in...so not sure if they are JBL OEM dustcaps or not...

Quite the steal!

Aluminum domes are a little harder to put in neatly, you might want to have an experienced re-coner do it.

Good point about the alum domes. I saw a few pictures on the 'net of D120F's that were reconed, and the alum domes just didn't look right...
