JBL Decade overhaul!

HopefulVT

Yard Sale Audiophile
Hey folks!
So I've taken apart my JBL Decade 36s, removing mids and tweets, and the whole crossover. Looking to have the crossover rebuilt, and have the speakers rebuilt/replaced-- I had been in contact with an excellent repair shop, but now I can't find their link!

1. Are the tweets in JBL Decade 36s worth replacing, or rebuilding?
2. Are the mids in JBL Decade 36s worth replacing, or...?
3. Who can I trust to rebuild this crossover?

Simplyspeakers recoiled and reconed the woofers... ported speakers THUMP!

While these are out of commission, I'm using some Altec Lansing Model 5s I picked up, which are wonderfully vintage, but still lack the highs, and bottom of the Decades.

The tweets and mids in the 36 are just fine, and should be kept as is and replaced/repaired if needed. The 36 is a great-sounding speaker, and to me an example of classic 70s JBL at its best. :) Don't change 'em -- they won't be 36s any more. All you need for the crossover is new caps soldered in -- can't see much point in doing anything else to them. Check the cap values, solder some new ones in place; should be a pretty straightforward DIY job. Oh, and enjoy them -- I still miss my pair.

Rebuilding a crossover is something you could do, the only person who will put as much care into your speaker project is you.

I replaced the tweeter in one of L 36's. It cost me about 50 bucks, got from that auction site. Glad I did. A tweeter rebuild done by JBL is going to cost you around $90.

I think Carl is up your way. He was an AK sponsor, IIRC. He kind of specializes in East Coast speakers but you might give him a call. I'm sure he'd help you out with the crossover repair in some way. Carl's repair
