I am eyeing a pair. If I can keep all the qualities of the JBL L-96 that I love and get a few lower freq's, why not....!

I had L96s first and thought the same as you are. I bought some L112s but never did care for them as much as the 96s. A bit more bass, yes, but I didn't think they sounded as smooth from top to bottom.

Some of that could be placement/room specific. Although the more recent trend is to call the L96 a bit smoother or more accurate, at the time they were being sold new the L112 was considered to be one of the top performing speakers in its class. That probably reflected some carry-forward of the reputation of the "legendary" L100 but for sure the L112 is no slouch.

Actually, my own favorite of this series is the L150A. It's half the size of a refrigerator but there is no disputing it has more of an authoritative presence in the room than the 112 or 96.

I think you will find that what you like with the L96 will largely carry over to the L112, other than it does have more bass output and may need more care with placement accordingly. I've always used mine on stands, the L112 on original walnut lowboys that JBL made to angle them up slightly and elevate off the floor and the L96 either on those or on a pair of taller 16" Sanus stands that face them straight ahead rather than tilting.

When my L112s were part of my system, I had them on milkcrates (12" cubes) about 2 ft from the walls. They sounded OK but flat with a Dynaco 416. When I moved over to a Sanyo P series dual mono MOSFET 100wpc power amp, the bass opened up and walked all over the Dynaco. The bass had significantly more depth and "slam" on the Sanyo. I'm still scratching my head over the showdown - the 416 had 2x as many output devices, easily 2x the power supply oomph but the Sanyo kicked its ass.

As for the L96 vs the L112, I found the differences to be minimal other than the deeper bass of the L112.

I think John hit the nail on the head. I've owned L112s for thirty years and the L96 for maybe three. They are some of the best large "bookshelf" speakers I've heard. I also have L150A, L7, L5, 4412A, etc. I don't think it's because of my long relationship with the L112 that I really like them but when you get them right I can't resist the bottom of the 12-inch over the 10-inchers. Many will claim any of the JBL 10-inch 3-ways better any of the 12-inch, but I'm not one of those.

I will agree the L96 is easier to place and that the L112 really likes any elevation off the floor to clean up the bass, but the same can be said of placement issues between the L7 and the L5. The L5 plays well anywhere. The L7 reward hard work and experimentation with superior dynamics. To a slightly smaller extent that's how I feel about the L96 and L112 differences and experience. If you're lucky enough to own them both you'll spend forever trying to decide . . . and enjoy every moment of both. :thmbsp:

Thats what I might do...the L112 fed some nice ss power may be nice..:-)

You bet. The coils are rated for 300 WRMS, I believe. I was using a pair of bridged 300W Sony ES power amps on mine until just recently, although I've run them at 80WPC with my Tandberg receiver as well and they were ok. It's a small room though (10.5 x 10.5), I'd want more power on them than that for a larger room.

If the foam is healthy, let 'er rip!

If you're migrating over to JBL and SS, why not look for a pair of L300's or the larger JBL Monitors. You owe it to yourself, you know.:D
