JBL L-26 tweeter replacement

Does anyone know if other JBL tweeters besides the LE-25 will fit straight into the cabinet without cutting, moving screw holes or other mods? Finding a clean LE-25 on ebay is proving difficult and I might consider other options, if they are simple enough for my simple mind.

What, did I screw up or something?

I have a working LE25 here I can test, if that's what you need, which belongs to Wiredbecker.

And some dead LE25-2s, I believe they are.

Tech notes say sub 035TiA, which would be an upgrade, in my view, but I don't believe they are "drop-in," mechanically....

Oh. Are you saying, Zilch, that you have a working LE25 you would sell me? I'd be interested, if that's the case.

Well, that kinda stuff belongs in PMs, of course, not the open forum.

What I'm saying is L26s are supposed to have LE25-2 or LE25-4 in them, depending on whether there's an "A" after the serial number, not LE25 with no suffix, according to that published info.

I'm also saying that, in some indeterminate respect, LE25 is different from LE25-2, because there are different factory recone kits for each.

SO, you need to verify precisely what you have and what you are wanting, and I'd be looking to the working one for details as to what you might want to match.

I'm also saying that other options include reconing the defective, or upgrading both tweeters to 035tiA, currently still available new from JBL @ $146 each MSRP.

There is a pair of LE25-2's for sale on YouKnowWhereBay right now. Either the LE25-2 or LE25-4 will work, the only difference being the 4's tend to be more expensive, because of the metal trim ring, and a more dense foam surround. Voltage and resistance specs are identical. I paid $36 for an LE25-4, plus shipping. A pair of LE25-4's went recently for $67 plus shipping. Guy wouldn't sell to Canadians. I guess he thinks we are crazy, which is partially true. You shouldn't have to wait too long for one to pop up again.

Any of the series will work, as long as you get a pair of the same. LE25, LE25-1, LE25-2, LE25-3, LE25-4, LE25-6... they're primarily the same, with only cosmetic differences, for the most part.

Yes, one or two models may be 1 dB different in overall output level than the others... the obvious solution to that is just to turn up or turn down the tweeter level control a bit. That's what the level control is there for!!

BTW: LE 25-2, LE25-4 and LE25-6 use the same recone kit from JBL (D8RLE25-2, IIRC). The others also use a common kit, IIRC (D8RLE25)

BTW^2: NOBODY (including people on other message boards who formerly WORKED for JBL!) has ever found out, AFAIK, why you can't just use a LE25-2 cone kit in a LE25, or similar. Some time, when I actually find one I can sacrifice, I'm going to try installing a LE25-2 cone kit into an LE25... just to see how it works...

Regards,
Gordon.
