JBL L-99's Opinions/Info?

Hi- I came across a pair of JBL L-99's on Craigslist. All drivers are claimed original. The following is copied directly from the posting: "Classic pair of Vintage JBL L-99's Mirror Image design, w/ LE-20 tweeters w/ Huge Alnico magnets and LE-14 woofers w/ die cast Aluminum frames..." I wasn't able to find much on them, Does anyone have any experience with them? They look very nice to me, and the price seems right, but I love JBL's. I appreciate any info and opinions on them. Thanks.

Unless someone painted the LE14A cones black, they are not original. They should be sparkly white Aquaplas, front and back:

Lancer 99, also sold as S99 Athena, is one of several products which earned LE14A an undeserved reputation for having "muddy" midrange. Fact is, LE20-1, which hardly even qualifies as a tweeter by contemporary standards, could not be crossed any lower than 2 kHz, well above the capabilities of LE14A. Additionally, in that cabinet size and with that tuning, the woofer isn't able to do what it does do very well, which is play extended bass. In sum, then, the performance is mediocre.

No matter any of that if you like how they sound; the fretwork grille is at once beautiful and distinctive and the look is shared by some of JBL's most coveted designs of the era, e.g., Olympus.... :yes:

Zilch, in your estimation what can be done to a stock pair of Lancer99's to maximize their musicality (sound their best?)
