JBL L100s and grill color preferance

Burnt orange has always been one of my favorite grill colors.
There are sooo many black grills. It just seems kind of lazy. No thought at all given to the grill color. Every grill on every pair of speakers I own have either black, or brown grills. Mostly black. Personally I lkke brown over black.
I have four pairs of 80's Polk speakers. While I like the speakers, I've never liked those flat black grills they used. Especially on the larger models. I would rather have a grill color that better blends into it's surroundings. I've made new grills for several of my speakers chamging from black to brown.
I have a pair of ADS L570/2's with black perforated steel grills. I've decided to re-paint them. I'm sure I'll catch black for doing so, but they're used with several of the tube preamps and and amps I've built. The top chassis plates or chassis of this equipment has been painted with a hammered copper color and I want the grills to match.
A few examples below.
Love the amps!
At this point, I’m leaning towards the burnt orange grills.
I’m enjoying the color preferences discussed so far.

Understand the Psychology of Color
Put individual color swatches in front of your eyes for at least couple minutes.

Blue = calmness, trust, security, and intelligence; sky, ocean, Earth
Orange = vitality, enthusiasm, and warmth; autumn, sunsets, safety gear
Brown = groundedness, stability, and security; dirt, wood, debris

JBL logo is in orange. The tiny useage pops out.
But there are a ton more classic albums, songs, artwork and logos in blue.

I'm an artist, painter, love all colors and serious with colors.
Retired are director myself, so I understand colors as you mentioned, and appreciate your input!

Yes I agree, it's been an interesting thread to follow. Way I approached it from the start is how I would deal with it if I was the interested party wanting to purchase these. The subject is the speaker it self that interests me. If I wanted them and they were in over all great shape, but they had blue grills .... I'd likely ask the seller if he knew where I can get some brown ones. My thinking is, I bought someone else's speakers, but when I buy the brown grill, they are MY speakers now. Doing orange ... turns them into the icons they advertised, and that has an appeal to it I should think.

My better half likes the blue pyramid L100 grilles. She really likes the L166 black egg crates.

I'm not sure what that means, personality-wise.
I love those L166 Horizon grilles, maybe because they were the speakers that knocked the L100s off of the top of my hill, maybe because they were so unique and techy.

Regarding which is more iconic? The grilles in the “Blown Away” poster are dark, black wasn’t offered so likely Russet Brown. Hard to get more iconic than that.

It's getting hard to find L166 with intact grilles. I don't know of any aftermarket ones.

This would likely be taking the perforated material, vacuum-forming it, one of the cheapest ways to form plastic like this (most likely ABS or ABS+PC). The tooling would be a simple wood mold (with holes for the vacuum of course) and it would pull a cover membrane down on the perforated material.

I guess if you had a CNC machine, it may make life easier.

One of those things I’d love to have about one time each year, … along with a CNC waterjet, EDM, laser-cutter, …

Cheaper to pay someone who already has the machines! I bought a TIG welder a decade or two ago, taught myself to weld, … lost interest. I’ll stick with smaller-scale projects.

Gotta go now, installing a couple of new sliding door sets in the audio room, … did I say smaller scale? Can’t help the DIY gene.

Ooooo, home improvement, fun!

Yikes! Very expensive! Thanks for the help though!
When I bought my blue one from the guy in the northwest, it cost $325 complete (including taxes and shipping). Frame, stain, and painted Quadrex pyramids. This was in 2017. It still looks brand new.

These things aren't cheap. Even the plain-jane double-knitted grille replacements.

Same here, bought them from the same guy, great foam work (didn't need new grilles), but have since sold all of my shelf-queen speakers which included L100As.

I only need the grills and badges, frames are perfect. There’s an eBay seller overseas that has good prices including badges. I’m mostly concerned about original color accuracy. I need to contact them about that.

A friend bought an insert. It was not good. The generic Quadrex drooped. You may want to ask the seller about that.

Good luck!
