I have been offered a pair of JBL 110 speakers that need to be refoamed for $150.00. Not sure whether they need a recapping.

Is $150 a decent price for these speakers? It is my understanding that these speakers are supposed to be pretty good.

Hell yes! They have the same 033 tweeter and LE5-10 midrange as the L150s that I have. They are fantastic speakers and that 10" woofer is a great performer that should not give much up compared to similar 3-way JBLs with 12" woofers. $150 is an amazing bargain IMO.
 
The seller is not actively looking to sell them. I need to wait till I get my end of year bonus at the beginning of January to buy them. He's willing to passively hold them for me. But he said if he gets an offer of $200, he's going to sell them. But that is going to involve someone he knows going into his garage, seeing them, and saying "You wanna sell these?"

So basically, they're $150 for me. If anyone else asks they're $200.

I hope that makes sense.
 
I've always wanted to try them. Ive been a fan of the 033 ever since I got my hands on a pair of L40's. I had to take one apart to repair it, they are neat drivers....and very well made.
 
They are fantastic. I've had a pr for several years. I recently put them up against JBL 4311 and the L110 was a tad better: drums were more realistic and I love the dome tweeters! Best speakers I've heard. They are even awesome with mp3's!

Tell her it's for your MENTAL health, best for all the family to let you persue this direction of therapy, and it could take many years to cure.
 
Marketing points for Wife Acceptance Factors: Good listening for music in the house, hobby can be inexpensive due to small depreciation of gear value/profit from flipping repaired items, keeps hubby at home, increased knowledge of sound reproduction, audio hobby can be shared with offspring.

Downsides of hobby: Gear hoarding has to be avoided/hidden, living room gear may clash with SO's furniture wishes, mess in garage from repairing audio gear (principally speakers), impact on household finances (in some cases), hubby becomes obsessive about encounters with audio gear.
 
For me to convince my wife to add my L200's to the living room meant negotiations! There is always something the other half wants so make it a win win if you can..

That's a good price for these, ASSUMING all the drivers are original JBL drivers and correct for this model. Also, that the drivers are in good condition - not pushed in, torn, ripped, or damaged. It would be ok for the woofer's outer foam surround to be failing, crumbling, or gone, just so long as the woofer cone is intact and the speaker has not been played much if at all in that condition. Refoaming the woofers is relatively straightforward DIY or sending it to a service to do so. So figure on $40-$100 to get that done - it will renew the primary issue with any used JBL speaker over 10 years old, this is common. And do not let them glue the new surrounds to the front of the cone, JBL surrounds (with just a very few exception) are glued on the back of the cone edges.

Value also depends on general condition of the cabinets - JBL's had nice walnut veneer and good grilles with cloth. Badly scratched, gouged or damaged veneers and grilles can be repaired so don't let that be a stopper, but it can and does affect pricing. JBL cabinets respond very well to TLC.

Heh, you asked, we told you. Most of us would be on a deal like this quickly. I suggest you give the fellow a down payment to clearly hold the speakers for you, otherwise if someone knew about them and came up with the $200, you'll be out of luck. Even if you have to borrow the money from a friend, you might want to nail this down. If that makes you or your wife feel uncomfortable, I understand and then you should wait till your funds arrive.

Best thing to do is when the speakers are fully restored and in your sound system is to put them on some 8-14" tall stands, and play some music that you both love. Once you get your wife liking these speakers, you'll have an ally for your Audio interests.
 
Fantastic offer!! I'd jump on it, if I were you. Sound wise, "Pretty Good" is an understatement. You can listen to them for hours on end with no listener fatigue what so ever!!!
I wouldn't think they would need to be recapped. Pull the woofers and take a look at the crossovers. As long as all the capacitors look intact, no bulges or anything that looks like it has oozed out, I would say they are OK.
Which version are they? If there are the letters "A" and "H" either printed or die stamped in the foilcal to the right of the serial # they are L110As. The port will also be an elbow, not straight.

L110 is a WONDERFUL sounding speaker system. Classic JBL looks, love the black walnut. Recap with Daytons, Mine are keepers for life.
 
Twelve days since the original post. If the OP hasn't bought these yet he needs to get his head examined (or cough up the seller info!). Those are some very nice sounding JBL's and the price is absurdly low.
 
Don't bother with a re-cap. Just hook them up to a competent front-end with enough power and simply enjoy them as they are. Assuming an iconic JBL needs a re-cap is often a fool's errand.

That being said, I'd get them safely to my house ASAP. Even if he doesn't sell them to someone else, careless handling could damage the tweeter dome, or worse. Just be sure to use correct surrounds and put them on the correct side of the cone!
