I'm wondering what properties this membrane should have ideally. As I mentioned above, I'm guessing its job was to filter out smaller particles of dust and such that might find their way into the voice coil gap. I've seen photos of other JBL woofers that seem to have replaced this foam bit with what appears to be a cloth mesh. This is why I was leaning toward using a scrap of speaker grill material; it would be porous enough to permit about as much airflow as the original foam, yet would not degrade over time.
What is the purpose of that voice coil vent anyway? Not all woofers have them. Is it to reduce backpressure on the dustcap to allow the woofer to move more freely, or does it serve some heat dissipation function?
