Jbl L166 horizon refoam

I picked these up recently off of CL localy (4 total)
and the surrounds are dead on all.
I have had exelent luck with past refoam jobs,
(dahlquist magnent 10's & infinity sm 120)
these were quite forgiving & no voice coil rub,
as for these jbl upon further inspection, Ive noticed
these arnt very forgiving & are going to need
to be shimmed.

I'm asking for any input, suggestions, experience,
& who would have the best refoam kit out there.
In the past I've used orange county kits, with good
results. As for these jbl's what would be the best
option????

Rick's kits do not generally include dust caps or shims, even for JBLs. His rely on playing a bass tone to center the coil. The plus side is no dust-cap removal is necessary. The negative is you have to be careful and can't be a klutz. Of course the proper installation on your L166s is with the surround on the back-side of the cone which may be what you're referring to as "not very forgiving". It's not that hard. I've done several JBL 10" woofers with Rick's kits without a single bad outcome. The 12" should be even easier.

So all in all, shimming is not needed on any LF speaker?
I'm all for that, the infinities I done were also glued to the
backs of the cones, and seemed quiet easy. I have read
many threads about jbl having tight tolerences in the
voice coil gap and shimming was nessary. Although using
tone controll seems to be the better way. I'm sure
others will oppose this method. I'm getting ready to start
and will be ordering 2 sets of kits asap. Thanks for your
input.
