JBL L19 confused about woofers

2manyspkers

Well-Known Member
I obtained a pair of L19 speakers with incorrect woofers and when I looked them up it appeared
that the original part was the 116A
However in researching here and finding a past discussion

Help with JBL L19s

It appears that the members conversing are saying that the 116H is the correct model

Hence the confusion, it appeared from looking at pictures that all the units I found had the 116a
style woofer.

What would be the correct woofer and how much difference does it make in sound reproduction or in resale value if I used the incorrect version ?

Thanks

Yeah; I think the "A" model woofers (L19) were Alnico and the "H" models (L19A) ceramic (or ferrite?); more or less interchangeable. Mech would know for sure. Value should be virtually the same.

OK, I understand, didn't realize there was a L19 and L19A !
Those are some pretty expensive speakers, the one's I have found are 116H-1
for 70ea plus 8 shipping or a pair of ones that need refoaming for 70 plus shipping / re-foaming .
Is that the normal going rate for 116H-1's ?
Are there other JBL models that are replacements or other brand speakers that are equal or better for a lower cost ?

Time and again I see visions of JBL scroes shot down by the realization of how expensive it is to properly restore them. Honestly, to me, $70 ea plus shipping is not expensive for a woofer. L19s are nice little speakers, but if you just stick any driver in the hole, then they're not L19s any longer.

Have the 4301's, great smaller speaker. Just refoamed them, get your kit from Rick Cobb, member here,or Loonie tunes at the bay. 4301 or L19 have the Alnico magnets.

Rick Cobb is always good. Another reliable source that is local to me but ships nationally is Springfield Speaker Repair. They have a lot of correct JBL surrounds.

As Zonker noted, the "A" woofer has an Alnico magnet. The "H" woofer has a ceramic magnet and was used in the L19A. As near as I can tell, the crossovers are identical, and the H woofer was sold as a service replacement part for the A woofer.

The key is to be patient and strike fast when you see a good deal. ePay is usually the "gotta have it now" price. With a little luck you can pick up a battered pair of L19 with good woofers (except foam) local for cheap. However, depending on where you are and your luck, it might be a long wait. Keep reading up on them and learn about how to restore them....don't get in a big hurry and try to get it all done tomorrow. Treat it as a learning experience.

Good luck!

I am not usually patient but I have a few other sets of speakers so time is not an issue, what sort of places do you usually run across used battered speakers like I am looking for. I will start checking some more of the local thrift shops ....

Where are you located? Maybe someone here has a pair they could part with if they knew they were close to you.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I am near the border of Illinois and Wisconsin just a couple of miles off of I 90
I would be willing to trade for or buy them.

My original post was lost in the database recovery.

If you look at the serial number on the foilcal, the L19 will have just a number, the L19A will have an A following the number. That said, some like the Alnico woofer, some like the ferrite woofer. The crossovers are identical, and they can also benefit from a recap if you're up for it.

I checked and I do not see an A. I can probably do a recap although I'm a little out of practice
soldering small parts and I need some new soldering equipment and a solder sucker as the old stuff I had is long gone.
I'm inclined to try to stick with the original equipment as much as possible on the speakers and such.

I can supply the grilles, but it may take till next week to find them! Still checking on the woofers, probably also know next week.

UPDATE : I have not yet run across a pair of the 116a woofers that were reasonable in price, the last one's I tried to get went for 140 +
I dropped out at 120.00
I have recently found some woofers from L86 speakers model 117H-1 and am considering using them, but they are not in my possession, and I have not been able to confirm that they would fit the cabinets.....Does anyone know or have a suggestion ?

The L86 woofer may be the right size and work, you should use original parts though. It's the difference between having a pair of speakers to listen to and having L19s to listen to. These woofers are sell for the prices they do because people love the speakers they're used in. Keep them pure.

Maybe it was an omen, a pair of good condition speakers (116a) came up a few minutes ago, just need re-foaming , probably cost a little more than the other speakers would have but they're the real thing...and they'll be here in a few days !

Of course it was Karma (not an omen) what was I thinking !
