JBL L200 DRIVERS

I have the drivers from JBL L200 Studio Masters — LE-15B woofers and LE-85 with H91 horns. I also have a pair of 077 “slot” tweeters. All are in fine shape. I had to part with the cabinets (painfully) during move to smaller digs; even worse, the xovers (and horn lenses) disappeared during the move.

But I have other cabinets, very well-built, beautifully veneered, and more “normal” proportions. Internal volume is probably a little bit smaller, but a bit taller and, pragmatically important, a much smaller footprint. I think they’ll work well with the drivers, though of course not the same. If an L200 owner can provide the dimensions of a cabinet, I can make comparative measurements, then the differences will be quantifiable, not guesswork.

Lacking the crossovers is a bummer, but incorporating the 077s would require modifications anyway. I know absolutely nothing about crossover design — I can tell a cap from a coil from resistor: that’s the sum total of my knowledge. I will need help with it, maybe even have someone design/build it for me.

One of the best things about this project is that out-of-pocket cost will be Zero. Except the crossover. That rules out an electronic xover — I have one but don’t like it. I once had a Luxman all-tube 3-way (model 2003 maybe, my memory is hazy) and even that one degraded SQ.

If you know the speaker, you know its qualities. When I got them I invited a friend over, his ears are solid gold. Uri is Israeli, a sabra born before statehood, fought in the wars as a kid. A tough guy. I played Hamza el Din, playing an oud — a simple acoustic instrument played by a master and beautifully recorded. Uri began to weep. He told me as a child he listened for hours on end to an oud player in his village, mesmerized — and listening now through these JBLs took him right back — “I can see him, he’s here in the room with us. You can stop looking for other speakers, these are reality.” For him it wasn’t about accuracy, but truth.

Any advice is very welcome and appreciated.

If you can find the T-S parameters for those woofers and post the box measurements (volume, port count/length, etc) I or another member here can plug them into one of the speaker design softwares and give you an idea of how they'd behave in your enclosures.

The other drivers will care much less about what box they're put in. You may need to adjust any baffle step compensation in the crossover though if the width of the cabinet is changing dramatically.

Thanks Nate. Internal volume of new cab is 4,550 cubic inches.

As to TS parameters, I ran across this in a JBL forum — "If you are referring to the LE-15 with a pleated surround, the 2216 used in the 4325 monitor, then you may be out of luck. The 2216 driver is not listed in the T/S tables. It looks like they never published them for that driver."

I found the tables at Lansing Heritage, and the above is true — LE15B is not listed. So out of luck on that one, unless someone has other info.

Is it possible to make a general assumption about a 15" driver of this type? I know it will produce bass — I don't need to know the exact Hz.

Or is my thinking dead wrong? As I said in OP, I know nothing.

As popular as JBL is, I would have thought someone would have taken TS measurements at some point. Interesting.

L200 cabinet is just under 5cu.ft. internal volume - I did the math from measurements on mine.
(Not taking into account drivers or horn.)
Ports are 4"x7.25" (x2, L200 (LE15B), not the B model).
Lots of choices for crossovers!!

Where are you located? I have a line on some cheap L200 cabinets.
Wow, thanks Magnate — but I'm West Coast. Even if they were free, shipping would be prohibitive. And they still wouldn't fit my space, which I why I let mine go.

My plan won't work, it was obvious when I saw the numbers from Nedseg and Gdmoore. I went to one of the links suggested, and a guy said his LE15Bs were
great down to 30Hz — in a 30 cubic foot enclosure. I lived for 9 weeks in a 30 cubic foot enclosure on a sailboat!

And only down to 30?

But I still have these really nice cabinets, I must find a use for them that will work. Thanks for all the help gentlemen, saved me a lot of wasted effort.

I bet we can find a woofer that'll work with your enclosures that would pair well enough with the rest of the L200 stuff you have. A more modern woofer from JBL or Beyma perhaps. Do you have a preference for sealed/ported with these enclosures? (Is there already a port, and if so, how big around/long is it?)

May I recommend the JBL 2214 12" woofer - its the unsung hero from the L100T and T3, the 4425,
and a number of other speakers. Look up the specs - its nice!
Check and see if it might not do fine woofer duty with your horn and slot tweeter.
I sold a pair recently and I am amazed at how well they work in the UREI 809As in coaxial 2-way mode!

Yup, On a good day, with a tailwind, the 15Bs will do 30hz more or less...in that (L200) cabinet.
(I measured mine - 'fairly' flat to 40hz, then drop off -12db at 30hz.)

"Another one bites the dust," was my first thought — then you guys revive it! And if the 2214 is an unsung hero (nicely put HJ) I should give it a chance to sing. I do have 2 pairs of older JBL 12-inchers, but don't know which they are — one's white and rippled, the other dark gray and untextured; it has a very shallow basket, probably ideal for a side-mount on a skinny-baffle line-array — the undernourished fashion-model look, all the rage today.

They're not here, my son is storing them for me (big heart, big garage) and I'll check on my next visit. If not the 2214s, we can at least check the specs to see if they're viable.

As for ports, Nate, I preferred sealed but I'm not dogmatic about it — I've liked and disliked speakers of both types.

I also have two very vintage Electro-Voice 12-TRXB coaxials — they have a whizzer for mids so I guess 2.5-ways. Had 'em for years and never even heard them for lack of cabs; and having no idea if I'll like them discouraged me from trying. I asked about them here on AK and got many helpful replies, but no one said "Do it! They'll blow your mind!" That's what I need to hear before I get off my lazy... sofa.

Maybe the best thing about this thread is the desire to help me. It seems rather rare in the world. I remember a time when it was common, even normal — and that's not nostalgia.

Just got home from work so I can post pix from my archives.
Again, I sold the 2214s on the left 2 weeks back, you can see front and back of them. (Not for sale)
The JBLs on the right are the coaxial version and need new surrounds - they're my spares for the 2 pair of UREI 809As in my TV room ...
I had posed them together a few months back to show just how much alike they are.
So, neither pair are for sale but are very impressive sounding!
I owned a pair of L200s I built up over 7 years - so I know what the JBL 15s can do -
I put 2234s in mine.
But really - hunt down some of the 2214s - I think you'll like hearing a 3 way with them on the bottom.

How are your carpentry skills? If you have any at all you might think about building a box around 5cu ft with twin ports 4" and 7 inches long... Doesn't have to be L200 design. One thing that the L200 cab did was to recess the baffle so a grill could provide protection for the acoustic lens on the LE85 driver.. That is something to think about with whatever box you use.. Oh, and yep, definitely incorporate those 077's too! They do bring out the upper highs better than the LE85 can.

Absolutely use the slot tweeters! I reworked a pair of Altec Valencia speakers in Heathkit cabinets and
added a pair of JBL slot tweeters on top to expand the high freqs and give impact to the upper mids!
And yes, I added slot tweeters to my L200s years ago!

This. How much floor space do you have to devote to the speaker cabs? You can simply design your cabinets around that space. Just build up until you achieve 5 cubic feet, add the ports, and go to town.

If you don't have the proper equipment, you can get the panels pre-cut at the home center.

Pardon the boasting, they're excellent. It's how I made my living when not making a living — it ranged from designing/making furniture to musical instruments to a 30-foot catamaran. I was in Africa with fabulous woods available — 100-year old Teak was as cheap as fast-growth pine is here. I had great workshops available then, a privilege to use such tools.

All that is a continent away now, but as GD suggests I'd have the panels pre-cut, just have to plan very carefully. But it's still a major build, so for now I'll explore options that utilize my other cabinets: they're very nice.

I'm not trying to duplicate the L200s, but to capture some of that peak JBL "magic", which I loved with the L200, L220, 4315 and Harkness C40 I used to own. With the 077s and LE85s doing what they do so well, the right 12" woofer might play a fine cello in the Trio. If the LE15 was Pablo Casals but he can't make it to the gig, I'm fine with Janos Starker stepping in.

Total agreement. The LE85 just runs out of treble at a certain point, omitting some sounds that make certain pieces of music super-special to me — I don't really listen to them at all if that higher consciousness is missing.
