JBL L300/136a Help

Here is the 2216Nd1.. BTW The Nd stands for Neodymium, a rare earth element used in the magnets.. Bolt pattern matches, easy to install. These things were ridiculously light weight, when they came at the Post office I thought maybe the magnets were missing or something!

I totally agree. I would never have bought these if not for triamping. (My L200's have 077 tweeters added). But I think that, particularly for these older speakers that active crossovers and multi amps brings its own rewards in SQ as well. Also complexity, but the improvements were worth it for me.
 
Mine were reconed way back in 10-1988. Before there were surround kits. New surrounds, twice since. Last in 2017, by Speaker Repair Pros. So far, they are still working well.

Another angle I am considering... are there any aftermarket kits that are worth a try for the recone? With the OEM becoming unobtainium is everyone just scrapping these if they go bad or has there been any "scientific" reviews of the usual aftermarket sources? I feel like it is such a waste to just have to leave it out to pasture....
 
I noticed that earlier in the week but had already decided to move on to replacing wholesale... now that I am rethinking, I will send them an email and see what they have. Thanks!

I've always replaced the woofers & subwoofers in my JBL, all at once. Expensive, but at least you aren't pulling speakers out of the cabs, every five years. Kinda like changing all tires on a car, at once. :)
 
Had someone ask, so I thought I would include a pic of the "refurb" finished product on one of them... would still like to get the woofer situation figured out, but for now they work, sound fine, and will let me play some vinyl.

He is not cheap. He does quality work. I'm so glad he followed in the old Orange County Speaker's footstep. :thumbsup: All of my JBL Pro techs in Hollywood and North Hollywood have retired. :(
 
S/N 22670 is awful close to the change to 136H woofers, Edgewound might be surprised when he pulls the woofers if he's expecting 136As!

Agree, if one is not hung up on the original 136A’s, the 2231 alnico, or 2231H/2235H are the next closest to OEM. Many times though the Pro 22xx Series have gray frames, not black.

While I agree with the experiences many have had with the 2216nd, where can you get them and at reasonable prices? Here’s one pair for $1500 obo now on eBay:

What part of Mars are you located in? Bao at Speaker Repair Pros does excellent work, he’s done a bunch of drivers for me

Ken (edgewound) at Upland Loudspeaker also does great work and has been working on True Reproduction aquaplas coated recone kits as close to OEM JBL as possible. Check in with him about potential recone kits.

Looks somewhat like a tight spot for L300’s, understood if that is the available room. They do like space though.

Yes. You are correct. In the late 90’s to early 2000’s, the only surrounds available were thicker wide roll, sorta generic polyurethane versions which mostly fit but were too thick and stiff. Somewhat thinner versions became available in mid 2000’s and with the advent of multiple suppliers, the correct narrow roll thin flexible and longer lasting polyether surrounds purpose fit to JBL cones and frames.

Below is the OP’s driver with original OEM thinner neoprene outer gasket. Note how the surround pretty much completely fills the spacing.
