There is a 'near mint' set for sale on eBay. While I lust after them, I have never listened to a set. Has anyone out their listended. What do you think? Can't even find a review. You would think one would show up on google, but not luck. Thanks.

L300

The L300 is an outstanding speaker. The 077 ring radiator delivers very sweet HF, with a tactile quality and high resolution. The H92/LE85/L91 horn/compression driver/ acoustic lens combo is the best of the vintage conical offerings from JBL. Very realistic midrange/ vocal reproduction. Very smooth. The 136a and 136H 15" woofer variants deliver very strong and accurate bass that has to be heard/felt to be believed. All-around excellent sounding speakers with any type of music. They're very easy to drive and beautiful to look at. I have many hours of listening experience with these awesome jewels. One of the best all-around performers of any brand.
Pound for pound, I'd go as far to say, a solid top ten 10 choice of all time :yes:
 
I was fortunate enough to be selling these great speakers during the mid-seventies. Great dynamic sounding speaker. Killer on rock and jazz. The bass on these guys is outstanding. And JBL's cabinets were top notch- beautiful finish! They were always our first choice in the demo room.
 
There was an active thread here on AK a few weeks back about our choices for a vintage dream speaker system, and the L-300 Summits were my first choice! I used to listen to them at Pacific Stereo and they pretty much blew everything else they carried out of the water, both in terms of performance and price. I was really not a fan of the sound of most of the other JBL models they offered at that time (The L-166 Horizon's sucked, but the L-65 Jubals did sound very good), but the L-300's were a great sounding speaker. The best thing about buying highly desireable vintage JBL speakers is that Asian demand almost guarantees if they are kept in perfect shape they will hold their value or appreciate! There are not too many other vintage speakers, apart from some Western Electric speaker drivers, some Altec models, some Jensen drivers, and esoteric drivers like Goodmans Axiom 80's and Hartley-Luth 220 MSG's that can lay claim to that distinction.
 
For something vintage and smaller that still offers excellent sound quality, currently on flea-bay there is a perfect condition pair of Gale GS401A speakers that are very rare and highly desireable. When I saw the listing first appear I wondered if anyone else remembered how good these speakers were, and the bidding activity answered a clear YES! While the JBL L-300's were my favorite speakers sold at Pacific Stereo, these Gale's were the best sounding speakers offered at the competing Federated Group store (which went on to become a chain of stores). These were also one of the best (and most unique) looking speakers, and especially on their matching stands. These Gale's are power soakers compared to the super efficient JBL's, so tube gear would not be an optimal driving power source......
 
I just came from listening to a pair of L300's that had just been gone over and repaired. They needed new surrounds.

WOW! I had forgotten just how nice these speakers sound. I tried to talk the owner into a trade, telling him that he really didn't want speakers that big, but alas, he didn't see the humor in my suggestion. He just purchased them from the original owner a few months ago. Man, I've just got to figure out a way to get a pair of those.
 
I had a set and parted them out years ago without even giving a listen. They were "too big" and the woofers needed surrounds, plus I made some nice coin on the flip.

All in all though, probably one of the major fubars of my audio life...:yes:
 
Good condition pair of 4333A were auctioned out of University of Victoria, B.C., Canada. They went for less than $1300.00 Canadian. The catch was the pick-up only. :no:

Old news, actually. Jackgiff and I both used PT waveguides and 2235H to upgrade L200s nearly four years ago. That's E'Wave's "roots," in fact, 4/1/2005:

You can see that Mac opted for 2380A in place of HL92 in his backyard build, and others are trying E'Wave's PT waveguides, as well, typically the 1.5" version, in their 43xx projects.

My 3-way used 2380A with E'Wave as the supertweeter instead of the slot, 4/5/2006, and Mac sent me a bottle of native single malt in appreciation when he built his quasi-L300 clones just over a year later.... :thmbsp:
