JBL L36 cabinets, Frazier 10" woofers

I found a free pair of really nice but empty L36 cabinets on CL yesterday; they're now in my garage. My new plan is to install 10 inch Fraziers in them and add a pair of horn tweeters (Fosters)I also have. The Fraziers have the low-pass filters and I'll put in a capacitor downstream for the tweeter.

I don't know if the Fraziers were meant for sealed cabinets or ported ones. If ported, I would just cut an opening for a plate to hold the tweeter and leave the port open. Otherwise, I would seal that opening. Most of the Frazier cabinets I've seen on AK were vented somehow, some with folded horns and/or that Helmholz resonator design.

Any thoughts from the Frazier enthusiasts here?

I'm pretty sure all Fraziers were usually in a ported cabinet, the size of the port will reflect the specs of the woofer for a given response.

Thank you. This will be a trial and error effort, I don't have specs for the speakers. I keep hearing wonderful things about Fraziers, so I'll see. Maybe I'll try one of those phone apps for tuning the ports.

you might wind up with something that sounds fun, but the magic of Frazier speakers is in the synergy of the stone simple crossovers and the Helmholtz Resonator cabs, along with the drivers.

I think a lot of Frazier speakers ran a fairly simple crossover so it might be simple to get things working correctly.

The Frazier Mark IV, which I believe had the same woofer I have, a 10 incher (F1028) with fabric surround, is almost exactly the same dimensions as the L36 cabinets and also used a compression horn tweeter, so was a two way, crossed over at 2,000 HZ. Since I already have the inductor, this should be a simple install, at least for a trial. The only thing I don't know is if the Mark IV had that Helmholz resonator. I doubt it since it appears to just be a bookshelf-type box.

Addendum: after googling some photos of Mark IVs, it looks like there is a slot/port under the woofer, with approximate internal dimensions of 1" X 9" and maybe 10" deep. Another photo appears to shows the motor board open at the bottom with about a 1" slot and a shelf at the top of the slot extending about 10" towards the rear of the cabinet.

It appears I have some options there, so I'll probably start with that slot arrangement.

as a former owner of mark IVs, i can tell you, they had the resonator, as did all the frazier designs i've ever come across

In the photos I've seen the slot doesn't appear to have any taper or angles other than 90 degrees on any dimension. I can probably approximate some dimensions by measuring the photos and calculating the ratios.
