JBL L65 and JBL Jubal odd pair.

Picked up this pair for $30 on estate sale today.
Very good condition cosmetically, woofers need refoaming.
Once you take off front cover there is aluminum plaque on the front of the speaker.
On one speaker it says JBL Jubal, on another JBL L65. What should I make of it ?
I plan to refoam and check them out. Beyond that I dont have a plan, I own way too many speakers already.
Any thoughts/advice ?

The JBL Jubal and JBL L65 are the same speaker and this situation has been seen before.

The tweeter if clean and working are worth $400+

Speakers are still in the trunk of a car. No pics yet, but they look like any on the net.
Basically I'd like to know if they would sound differently and if crossovers and drivers are not the same.
Regarding $400 tweeters I am not sure this is something I would sell or need to buy. :D

My plan is to refoam and audition. Currently I listen to Advent Maestro speakers.

My L26 Decades also have mismatched foilcals. I've seen at least three L65 variants, with slightly differing crossovers and port locations. Are your ports in the same place on both speakers?

I was just letting you know the value of the tweeter alone just so you know prior to any tear down. These speakers in really nice shape can cost $1000-$1200. But the tweeter is the same one used in the L300 that cost thousands more.

Sad, in a few weeks will see another cluster of Jubal drivers and cabinets being sold on ebay after being separated....just because of $400 tweeters.

Not necessarily. I will refoam and audition. I will not part great sounding speakers.

Yeah I don't know why you would go there, the op said they want to get them back in shape and try them out. My point for the third time is the speakers have a lot of value whole or in parts that work.

I would plan on some kind of stands about 18 inches off the floor or they might be to bassy in your space.:thmbsp:

Sorry about the connotation. I inferred this after reading about the value of the slot tweeters. It would be very expensive to refurbish a pair if the tweeters were in non-operating condition. I own a pair of L100's and it is sad to see auctions on ebay for L100 parts with the last one being an auction for a pair of very nice cabinets without drivers. BTW, I have always wanted a pair of Jubals but never had a place to put them in my smallish living room.

Port locations are the same, crossovers have components arranged differently.
Drivers are the same. On L65 it says Northridge, California. On Jubal its Los Angeles, California. Serial numbers are way apart, like 20000 apart.

Also brilliance/presence adjustment scale is from 0 to 10 on L65 but from -3 to +3 on Jubal. Any thoughts ?

Here is picture, farm fresh. I ordered surrounds, spend $25.
So far I am in for $55 total but one mid has a tear . I fixed it with elmers glue and tissue.
Hopefully it will hold, otherwise its another $50 for someone parting them. :)

How did you get them to hang from your ceiling? :D

Very sweet. If they were mine, I might ignore the mismatched foilcals (it's kind of a cool quirk, as on our L26s), or save a search on eBay for one matching foilcal if it bugs you. (If forced to choose, I would rather they both say "Jubal," just because that's a funky-cool name.)

I would also go through the crossovers, recapping them and making sure all the values and circuits are the same so the two speakers sound the same. If one crossover is a later version, I might update the earlier one to match it.

Regardless of the labels, as long as each pair of L pads (MF and HF) have their knobs set so that the indented dots stop turning at the same clock position at each end, and the L pads are clean, the MF and HF drivers should have matching output at any given clock position of each knob, if that makes sense. I suspect the knobs are already set that way anyway.

Thanks for schematics. I think crossovers are the only difference.
Surrounds are shipped and I cant wait to fix and audition the speakers.

I count 15 JBL pairs in your sig. Whoa, any favorites ? :)

Gotta love the JBL freaks, I'm recently converted and have a pair of L-65 Jubals. Looking to move up all the time. It's like an addiction, but a good healthy one.
