I love the L96 (great punchy bass from the legendary LE10H's), but after hearing horns last year I thought of something that could be the best of both worlds.
After attempting to recreate the L96 in a newly built cabinet accommodating Altec horns resulting in limited success (lost the punch in the bass), I decided to build cabinets for the horns only with the same front dimension as JBL's original L96 cabinet, and to simply stack them on top.
I used Altec 806A drivers with Dayton horns in place (in the circuit) of the LE5's. Initial results are superb. I had to back off the JBL midrange Lpad due to the sensitivity. They still need to be veneered and stained but when done should look quite good to my eyes.
