JBL L99 LANCER 99 SUB ??????

i picked up an old JBL Lancer L99 speaker.

The tag says L99 SUB LANCER 99

The woofer is an LE14A-1. Not sure what the tweeter is. I can't see the back. The crossover is an lx4-1

When I first saw this I thought it was maybe a sub-woofer add on for a the normal L99. But since the unit has a tweeter I'm not sure it's a sub. The woofer works. The tweeter is silent. Maybe blown out or bad control or loose wire or bad crossover capacitor. The tweeter is in perfect cosmetic shape with no dents or cone damage. The woofer also has no damage

Has anyone seen this before? I have just one.

Is SUB necessarily always an abbreviation for Subwoofer?
How many manufacturers actually label Subwoofers as SUB?
 
Well. I don't know what each manufacturer would do to mark a speaker to identify its function. Acoustic Research had a production called and Ar1-W and the W was for woofer. It's a logical conslusion though to see SUB on a big speaker and believe it's use is for bass augmentation.

Just asking if anyone knows what the SUB part means.

I'll take a stab at it. Since the lancer 99 is a pair of matched speakers with energizer (JBL amplifier) in one cabinet, then the SUB is probably the cabinet with out the amp.

I was thinking something similar. What we can conclude is that it doesn't mean subwoofer.
 
Before I posted this I did a google search on other L99 tags and pictures and most of them say nothing after the L99

Some say MSTR but those seem to be the ones with the built in energizer so this being the one without the energizer may make sense.

It also may explain why the guy who has these only had this one. It's possible the one with the energizer/amp broke and he pitched it.

I had seen a couple that say L99 type xxxx where xxxx is some number.
