JBL Lancer 66 ... ?

biscuithead

Me likes the eargasm retroplasm...
I have a pair of beautiful condition JBL Lancer 66s. I think they were built in 1961. I have had them for about a year, pretty happy with them... I am currently using them as my satelite speakers with an old Fisher console... Anyone else have these?
How do they compare with the other Lancer namesake speakers...? I have some Fisher speakers to compare them with and they seem better than those, of course. But I do not have many 60s speakers for comparison. I have many 70s speakers and they hold alright against some of these.
I do LOVE their look and style though...

Someone must have a pair, know something... I just hooked them up to a Sansui 4000... much more bright than the tube...

Do yours have the original "white" surrounds or have they been updated?

Mine are black... all black.
The guy I got them from told me he had just re-glued the surrounds to the cones...
Am I to infer from this question, that the black surrounds are not original...?

A few years ago i refoamed a pair of Lancers for a friend which had the white cones and white cone radiators.

They had ugly orange grills but after the refoam job they were some of the best sounding vintage speakers I've heard.

The 66 should have the LE10A. The later 99 had the white-cone 14-inch driver. Hopefully the PO meant he glued-in new foam surrounds to replace the notorious old Lans-a-loy material. If done right they should sound pleasant enough. The old cone tweeter could be the weak point if you're expecting more.

Lans-a-loy surrounds were white-ish, turning yellow (and hard!) with age. There's some indication the baffle and components were sometimes painted black to hide them behind the grille cloth as seen in this thread: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?13981-JBL-Lancer-66-Re-Furb-Questions

Not sure what you mean, can you post a photo?
I have two pair of JBL Lancer 66 model, this is the first pair with stacked drivers, bottom left 2.5" grilled port, and back plate is about 4" X 7" and no pot:

And this is the other pair with uncovered port, different driver configuration, and a cast aluminum back badge, and a x-over with pot housed in cast box:

* Both pair have had the surrounds redone... in two different styles, but the woofs are original.

I just bought a pair of JBL Lancer 66 from ebay.
But the woofer is white in color. Are these woofers are the original LE10A?

Or they have different version of LE10A?
Are they alnico drivers?

I thought the picture I posted was of the Lancer 66 but it has a woofer, tweeter plus a radiator. If it's not a 66 what is it? I re-foamed the woofers and radiators and they were original.
