JBL / Sad State of Affairs. . .

Why else would you sell something? I've given away lots of stuff--amps, horns, drivers, cabinets---but if I'm selling to strangers I want top dollar.

If the thought of people busting up or burning old speaker cabinets tugs at your heartstrings then open up a shelter for homeless speaker cabinets. Set up a foundation and raise funds. Get Sally Struthers as a pitchman.

As I look around me here, maybe I have! :D Sally Struthers :scratch2:

particle board does not make good firewood...

Too much glue = really toxic smoke...

I would like to know that some of the smaller speaker cabs in good condition went to a good home, too! I think there would always be somebody that would pay shipping (and "some" handling) charges to get a better cabinet than they now have.

Richard C.-----Giveaways are great if that's what somebody wants to do. But lots of speaker DIYers are far more interested in the drivers than the cabinets, that's where the real value is with many speakers, especially large horn systems which can be very expensive to ship.

For instance if a fella wanted to do a JBL rig based on the 4560 bassbin he'd probably be better off getting drivers and horns from ebay or some other such outlet and finding the 4560 cabinets locally. That's what I did, got the empty 4560s for free actually. And then passed them along for free to the next guy when I was done with them.

Interesting problem. What do you do if there are no modern replacement drivers for a given speaker?? A certain number have to be parted out to keep some of the remaining going. What happens in another 20 years?? A good business will be in a total rebuilding of the drivers I guess, but it won't be cheap Look at Human Speakers. The woofers start at 46 each and go up from there, and on some you have to have a trade in. I have no problem with his business and hope he becomes a millionaire, but it shows that it will not be cheap to keep your prized set of speakers going far into the future.
What would be nice is if we had more experimenters in some of these replacement speaker companies. I'm not surprised that Dynaco A-25s have replacements since so many were sold. But I am surprised, considering how many different models of KLH used the tweeter that go into my KLH 23s, that nobody has come up with a replacement for them.

Tom, I remember a guy out in Denver ? that had bought several JBL 4648's (dual 15" 2226) from the JBL tent sale, and it seemed like he couldn't even give away the raw cabinets. I hope someone got them! I doubt many Altec A7 cabs get shipped, either. Easier to just build a pair!

I didn't need my 4648 cabinet either, so I closed up one speaker opening, added a Parts Express Titanic III 15" sub, and tuned the ~7.5 cu. ft. cab to 20HZ. With careful EQ, it does well. The 2226's and a pair of 811 horns will make a nice DIY project, someday!

I hate gutting anything. Yesterday I actually tossed the old cabinet to a Curtis Mathis tube console. I took out the amp and PS, and after the cab sat in my back yard for 6 weeks, I finally tossed it. It felt good. Speakers are a bit different. I have had a set of HPM-900 drivers, x-overs, grills, badges, etc, everything except the carbon woofers, which are smashed beyond help. I want to part them, but also I could get a set of drivers and put them to use.

So I start looking around I can make a decent buck by selling individual parts, or I can make a bit less, sometimes a big bit less by selling the cabs with broken woofs which is fine, but I also would need to spend the time to pack, which is not available, and worry that they actually get there in one piece. So parts are the obvious solution. I like to think that this is the usual reason for folks parting out gear. Maybe not, but I like to think positive. Though it does kill me to have a perfect pair of cabs sitting around...... I may need to find some woofs...... I am conflicted, just a bit. :scratch2:
