I'm ready to Rock N Roll!
They're working, finally! Man this took more time than I though, but don't they always? :yes: And they sound great too. These CD's are killer. Clear, crisp, and smooth as silk. Wow! The bass is deep and tight. I'll be taking these to Zilchlab for some fine tuning in a couple of weeks but they are pretty good as is. I still need to make some grills but that will have to wait for a few more weeks. Here's some pictures, notice that everything is mirror imaged including the crossovers.

Thanks. Well I had a lot of help. Without Zilch this would have never happened. He ruined my ears after my first visit to Zilchlab.Hot damn! Those look utterly awesome. I can't wait to hear them!

He was not only inspirational but was helpful in every aspect. Thanks again Zilchster. :thmbsp: And my friend Coy was also a big help. He built the crossovers and did an incredible job on them. You should see the back side of those crossovers, a work of art! Thanks Coy. :yes: Oh and my son was chief gofer. I was just listening to them and they sound great even at low levels. 
I'm very happy with how they look too. Now if I can just figure out how to do the grills and have them look the way I want. I also need to find me a nice set of vintage JBL badges like the ones on later C-36 cabinets. :scratch2:

Thanks. I've looked at those grill kits before. They would probably work and I'll give PE a call to determine the size of the perimeter pieces. I really need something 1/2 x 1/2 to have a nice fit. Those badges are an option but I want a pair that are older like on these C-36 cabinets on eBay number: 130176711683.

I know you will be very happy with your new DIY two ways.
The LE14A is an exceptional speaker after being refoamed or "loosened" with brake fluid. My vote is for refoam, which doesn't dry out again. You have made some great choices!
I have bought some grille cloth from a source in Tempe, AZ which is essentially black with dark brown strands. It is used on several of my projects. If you will PM me your mailing address, I will send you a bit of it. It has the "proper period" look.

For those now more seriously contemplating adaptive reuse of LE14As, here's a link to Jack's earlier project, which in part inspired this one. He put the ports on the rear of his smaller Altec Santana cabinets with essentially the same tuning. They don't play quite as low as Duff's twice-as-big Barzilays, but LE14As like smaller cabinets just fine, too, TYVM:

I'm not sure of a source, but I suggest, if possible, you find a couple samples of what you like and tape them one at a time to the speaker and live with it for a couple of weeks and then decide. Sorry to sound like an interior decorator.

Thanks Snade. The grill cloth on your speakers looks great and is the look I'm after. I already bought some cloth from PE but it's going back. It also has the look I'm after but is made of some plastic material and looks like it will be difficult to work with. Steve looks like he's in the Christmas spirit!
