JBL speaker question

Super Member
I picked up off the side of the road a pair of JBL J350 speakers. They have a 10" woofer a 5" mid and 1" dome tweeter. My question is that the speakers say system impedence 8 ohms but all the drivers are 4 ohms according to JBL spec sheet I downloaded. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks

I don't have the spec sheet but I'll guess 4 ohms is the DC resistance of the voice coils in the drivers. The 8 ohm speaker rating is the nominal impedance of the speaker system....impedance varies with frequency so a single number really doesn't tell you the whole story. Resistance and impedance are similar but different concepts. Lots more to it but this gets you started.

Don't worry too much about the impedance of the individual drivers, but the "system impedance" rating at the crossover terminals where you connect to your amp. The crossover design accounts for the individual drivers and need to present something more uniform to your amp. 8 ohms is the normal load for most amps, so you're fine.
