JBL speakers.A love hate relationship.

I assume by "ribbons" you refer to the EMITs and EMIMs (and their variant versions like SEMITs and EMIT-Ks)? Infinity had electrostatics in their earliest speakers, and then EMIT/EMIMs, but never true ribbons.

It think the "7ft long ribbon" you refer to might be the line arrays of EMITs and EMIMs on the big IRS Vs. Those "wooden planks" were about three feet wide and nearly eight feet tall, and were finished with rare Mahogany with a lustrous finish that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Still, they were arrays of smaller drivers, and not single ribbons.

Good elucidation! :thumbsp:

There are some all-metal ribbons. The T1 ribbons on the Sequerra Signature series are just a very thin strip of pure metal. Someone here on AK substituted kitchen aluminum foil (considerably thicker) for the ribbon in one of these types of drivers, and reported that it worked fairly well!

To give credit where it is due (and not let an AKer appear to plagiarize! :nono:) the above was originally printed on Jan. 2 1915 in The Saturday Evening Post, written byTheodore Francis MacManus, and reproduced more recently in a Cadillac advertisement (as linked to above). Relatively few people can or do write that well today; it's worth quoting as much for the quality of its prose, as for its content!

Oh, and just so these digressions aren't a total "thread-crap", I've heard JBLs that I didn't care for, and ones that I liked a great deal. Not all JBLs were created equal!
:D

Any literate American would KNOW I did not write "The Penalty of Leadership" :nono:

I posted it to make my point, and position, on JBL.

I'm 52 and have had JBL's since I was 15..most of the recording studios I've worked in had at least one pair in them somewhere. For me its all about familiarity, I know what to expect when I listen or monitor via JBL's. I currently listen to 4312A's in a nearfield setup with a mix of tube and solid state gear..its the best sounding system I have ever owned.
I was recently given a set of 4311B's that I'm gonna tweak the crossovers in, maybe swap tweeters with my L20T's and make a new configuration happen. I'm a JBL fan and very proud of it...I even have a sign and hats!! LOL....enjoy the music!!!!

Have a pair of 4312a...and they usually sound great with the right amp in the right room.

Interesting though, just moved and put the speakers in a 2300SF basement I'm about to finish (looks like a roller rink now). Powered-up an SX-3700 and very disapointed in the sound (but the tunes are just for painting, and studding, and drywalling.

Anyway, they sound like ass. So my simple conclusion is.....it's the room.

Can't wait to get these babies into a controlled music room of smaller dimensions so I can hear that magic again.

So point is...check the room and speaker placement. Mod as necessary to get the near-field environment.

I got some 4311's due to their recording studio history.I never listen to them anymore due to DCM love.I guess the amp could certainly make a difference....I'll look into the Crown.
