JBL Speakers What are these?

Looks like Altec meets Dr Frankenstein on a drunken binge, or maybe grandpa with a golden screwdriver and jigsaw.

The tin can port tubes are a special touch and getting a bit too serious about recycling IMO.

It's been a while since they were loved.

Ha ha. I was wondering about the combination. For sale here in DC on CL

Spartanmanor has an e-mail into the guy and is supposedly the first on the list.. he is trying to go pick them up this morning... just waiting back on a second e-mail last I heard,..

Hope he gets them then- they scare me and I know they would scare my wife- but not as bad as a monster pair of Kenwoods in the living room

Looks like those were Valencias, at one point in their lives. What they are now... there's really not words in the English language for that. :D

Regards,
Gordon.

ROTF!!!! yeah.. those do look scary... I hope David does get them.. Since I haven't heard from him in a while, I'm almost betting he's on the road...

The Kenny's with no covers was more the wife.. ok.. it was me that picked them.. but I was gonna put the grills on them to make them look a little more WAFable... but she likes them better without the grills.. She was pissed when I brought them home.. but after she heard them.. :thmbsp: I think I will be hard pressed if I ever went to sell them, because she likes the sound too much... I am a lucky guy :D

Don't be fooled the cabinets are NM. The insides could use a little tweaking but the money is right and they are in the back of my wagon! And yes they are Altec Valencia's. They will look like this again:

Thanks James for the encouragement and info on these speakers. I think some good Karma just landed my way. :thmbsp:

That Reel to Reel deal did end up paying off for the both of us :thmbsp: Now I feel a lot better about the price.. bacause I'm sure that's what got you these

Now if I can just get some Karma myself.. and some A7s happen for me.... Maybe my trip to Boston this weekend will be it... but that isn't why I am going... Not to buy Karma.. but to meet what I'm am sure of, is a hell of a great member here!!!

BTW.. Bowtie was my info source... before I talked to him, I was pretty sure they were altec, but the hacks were throwing me off...

That sounds like a fun trip. I hope its not raining too hard on the road. Can you believe it ran all week after no rain for 3 month. Say hi to Paul for me. :thmbsp:

Well.. rain.. and what will probably turn into a 12 hour trip or more.. and Marcia wasn't real hot on going for such a short period of time for so many hours on the road... but Hey!!! I'm gonna make the best of it, and see some really cool stuff on the way :)

I'll tell him you said hi... and we'll probably even drink one for ya :D

externally yes, but my WAG is that they used to be 846A Valencia's and somebody had their local woodchuck gnaw out the baffles to resemble 846B/U porting.

please disprove or verify this with some better pics when you get them home.:D

Ok they are kind of ugly but the components are there and I can replace the front with new wood. The cabinets themselves are in good shape. I am not sure about the 416-8c woofers, these may be a replacement. Also some idiot installed some JBL dome tweeters and hacked in the ports. For the money I still think they were worth it and a project to boot.

Looks like they swapped an 811B in place of the original 511B horn. Probably 806A comp. drivers. You'll get a bit more if they are 802D's. The 416-8C woofers are the ceramic version of the Altec 19's 416-8B AlNiCo woofers. You've got about $700-800 bucks worth of drivers there. I can't tell if the ports are Progresso or Folger's :D Nice find, congrats!

BTW, those look to be JBL 034 tweeters in the port hole that you mention.

Maybe I should just part these guys out. :scratch2:

Well, that's up to you. I don't see what you've got for a crossover. Seems like a lot of port area for the 416's too. Basically, you have the makings of a quasi-Model 19 speaker. If you were inclined to do some tinkering, you might find that they are keepers. If not, you've made a nice haul.

Do some checking here, especailly with members dwojo and Zilch. They can steer you in the right direction. Some are extremely happy with the performance of the 800/900 series Altec 1" comp drivers, some say that they are lacking. I've owned Model 19's and I absolutely loved the HF performance, go figure.....
