I've been wanting a Sansui SR 838 TT for several years. I've watched several come and go on Ebay, but was afraid to bid as typically it's some average Joe that's found one at a yard sale, but hasn't a clue how to pack and ship such a fine piece of equipment. I read in horror about TT's arriving with the platter bashing the plinth for the entire trip. I'd have felt guilty buying one online to see it be destroyed by the cargo gorillas, there are only so many left, and they aren't being made anymore. I did bid on a few, relieved when someone made a higher bid to avoid sending another deck to the scrap heap.
I was watching one on Ebay, it had a reserve and didn't sell the first time it was listed, I emailed the seller, asking if he would ship using my instructions, but he could only agree to try, and didn't have much confidence in his ability to disassemble the unit, didn't know platter from plinth.
I posted my dilemma here on AK and John said he would act as my agent in San Diego, do an inspection, then if all was well he would pack and ship the TT.
He did all of that, and kept me appraised as the transaction transpired.
Then when he got it, driving to a neutral place to do so, he disassembled the thing packed it very well, foaming for each detail part, double boxed etc. and sent it to me, then asked for a pittance for his shipping materials and the actual UPS cost.
My beautiful TT has arrived and it's only possible due to John.
