Saw him with the Airplane in 1968 at the Fillmore East. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Buddy Guy opened for them. RIP, Marty.

Speak ing of, today calls for the playing of a bit of old "live" Airplane, something from the '66-67 era. I have a couple of Avalon BR performances from that period that are pretty spectacular, also s.t. I call a "Live Mash-up", a compilation of "live" JA material performed/recorded baetween 1966 and 1970. It's effin' wonderful w/ plenty of "Marty numbers" included. Heck maybe I'll play the mash-up and one of the mid-60s full performances.

In tribute:
This song is so special to me. I received my draft notice in May of '67. Before I was to go in late June, my soon to be wife and I were listening to this album and we were talking about uncertainties of what might happen with being in the Army and Vietnam, that I thought it might be better to just end our relationship. She emphatically said that she wanted to get married and things changed for me mentally. She got me through those horrible years. Every time I hear this song, I see her on the couch telling me that. Sadly, she's no longer with us.

You were @ the Nam (in the field) for what length of time?

Met him on a few different occasions and was a nice but quiet guy. Great singer, songwriter and artist. RIP Marty.
