Jensen 700-xl refurbish

Bought these Jensen 700xl from goodwill for $20. They were in pretty rough shape but I figured they were worth a cleanup. They should be completely sanded and re-veneered but with a toddler there’s just not enough time.

I started by scuffing up the finish and filling in some chips with plastic wood. I then used wood markers to color the plastic wood. Then 2 coats of semi gloss poly coat. Painted the rear cover just to keep it on one piece. Ordered some cheap speaker gill cloth from parts express and cut to fit. Then put some inexpensive feet on them.

Then rebuilt the crossovers with all film capacitors. Repaired the wiring for the dome tweeters. Also packed some insulation in there to eliminate some of the “boominess”.

They aren’t perfect by any means but they sound great and look a lot better than they did. Also you get a rare glimpse into what they look like with no grills covering with the huge midrange horn and 12” woofer since not many will be taken apart.

I’m pretty sure it took some prying with a screwdriver. I wasn’t too concerned because of the condition of the cabinets. Then the front grills are actually screwed in from behind so they can only be removed by removing the back. Unfortunately the wood swells over the years and they do use sealer on the backs so it’s just a matter of careful prying, if possible

I got it off! I put in wood screw in about 1/4” (there was a hole mid top) and pulled a few times until it popped open

I didn’t need to refoam thankfully. The fabric I used was from parts express. It was just whatever they had that was close. There’s some sellers on eBay who have better fabric but much more money. This fabric was more of a plastic material.
