Jensen P8R(X) 8" Alnico driver?

Hey dudes!

Does anyone know what the differences are between an old Jensen P8R and a P8RX?

I have one of these I'd like to use with a low power guitar amp build but am unfamiliar with the "X" designation.

I have pulled P8R's in the past from Fisher consoles and I recall that although they all seem desirable by some guitar guys, but certain models more-so that others.

I'm not particular myself, but was curious to see if anyone knew how the "X" version differed from other P8R's.

Thanks,
RC

Pretty sure the X meant eXtended range.
The ones I had - I think - must've been reconed, though.

Pretty sure that the P8RS that Heathkit originally used in those speakers was an extended range (and larger magnet structure, in fact) version of the plain-vanilla P8R.

Thanks, Mark!

The thought (X=Extended Range) crossed my mind but figured that it would be too easy and there must have been some other Jensen super secret high techie reason behind it ;)

I'm good with extended range

The one I have here looks very similar with the exception of it's mill finish (not painted) and it has a ribbed cone.

I think that the original cones would have been ribbed; the P8RS certainly was. The P8RS likewise had the "default" aluminum finish - this brown one is something of an anomaly (to me).

Believe it or not, I actually sold them - and the freebie Heathkit cabinets which I had bought them for and the RP-103s that were in 'em - to a local (Vermont, it's all relative) hifi colleague who wanted a pair of Jensen Duettes. They're pretty dang close to Duettes.

I do note with some amusement that this thread seems to lack, shall we say, broader appeal :-P

You apparently amuse easily ;)

Not sure how broad appeal a conversation about Jensen console speakers would have under the best conditions for a conversation about Jensen console speakers if you know what I mean.

Hows this,
Although it DVM tests fine, I can hear a slight rattling in the one I have when I hold it then flip it over and then back upright again.

Maybe that will spur on some lively speaker mechanics conversation.

I used to have a fecal load of AlNiCo 8" speakers (generic but very close relatives of the Jensen P8R family)... but over the years I've offloaded them all, I think :-(

As to your rattle - I'm guessing evil spirits. Exorcism may help.

I used also have several of these from back in my Console Cannibal days. All gone with the wind also unfortunately. That seems to be the way it works. If you have no real use for something your always swimming in them. When the need or desire arises, ya got nuttin.

Maybe it's a maraca masquerading as a Jensen P8R :scratch2:
