JICO neo SAS N9ed AR questions

Hi All,

I just received my JICO neoSAS-S for a Shure N91ed and I want to double check some things before I try it out. It’s going on my AR XB with a stock headshell. The price for this one was right plus a good m912ed cart body, so I went with it despite knowing that people seem to love boron and that this is a pretty high compliance unit for the AR in some folks minds.

I run a M93E with the original hi track stylus now. My understanding is that the function of the 912ED and 93E are identical (along with other numbers) except for the style of the body mounts and shrowds/clips.

First question, is there any reason to use the body of either variant I have over the other? I don’t know if the metal clip of the 93 is less than some how or vice versa.

Second question, if there’s no difference other than appearance, how do I use a multimeter or something to check which cart body is in the best shape and most worthy of this special stylus? I’ll accept links or references to trustworthy guides too. I have two M93Es, a strange SPS Omni body, and now this M912ED, I think they are all this same family.

Last question is more generally if there’s anyone that’s run this in an AR XA or XB that has some tips for installation and set up. I didn’t get the instruction manual with the stylus, just the box, so my next step is to look one up for the recommended settings. I’d also appreciate if someone with experience with this or similar application wouldn’t mind sharing wisdom.

Ok so I ruled out the weird Omni PS whatever. Side by side shows the plastic would need trimming to fit the stylus.

Also it seems the plastic body of the 912Ed is easier to get into the AR headshell rather than the spacers I use to get the clip to fit the thread depth. That being said I’m still interested if there’s any other reason to use the plastic body vs clip body (maybe weight? I can try to weigh them side by side). Next I’ll also figure out measuring the carts somehow which I’d assume makes more difference than the clips/plastic?

Welcome to AK! First off, please make sure that any multimeter you use is a Digital one, no analogue meters allowed! I would tend to think that the cartridge without the clip might be more secure, after all your new stylus needs to be protected. It might be best if you can find a DMM that has impedance settings in addition to the resistance settings. That would offer more information about the cartridges and suitability for the stylus. Measure across R-G; W-B.

The only difference between the two is with the "clip" you can mount it to the headshell, then "clip" the cartridge body in place but for the AR headshell, the plastic bodied M91 is a better choice.

The cartridge bodies are identical, you can use any N91 or N93 stylus in both of them.

Did some weighing while I have everything apart anyway. I didn’t expect the Jico to come in lighter than the stock n93e.

Annoyingly my spare headshell has that issue where it won’t fit all the way in the plastic collar of the tonearm, so my hopes of having a quicker swap/vtf change for different quality records is gone for now.
