Just finished up with jmosher's 2230. This one worked just fine before restoration, Jeremy was just looking to get her refreshed so it will be ready to rock for the next 20 years. I recapped everything except the tuner sections, which perform just fine.

Here's the amp board before cleaning and recapping. This unit was quite dirty.

Amp board after cleaning and fresh Panasonic FC installed. I cleaned up the heatsinks and reinstalled the outputs with fresh thermal grease and insulators.

I also recapped the phono board and tone amp board. All Panasonic FC. Lots of caps on that tone board.

Here's a shot of the 2230 warming up on the bench for a power output test. It made 38WPC, a healthy increase over the rated 30WPC, I'd say. I think the new 100V 6800uF filter helped a bit.

A little glamour shot. Sure is a pretty face. But it's got some substance too. Very nice sounding little unit, I hadn't heard a 2230 until now. Can't say it's good enough to dethrone the 2245 as my favorite Marantz, but it's close.

Last shot of new filter and coupling caps. You can see a bit of the cleaned up and recapped power supply board in there too. All the voltages are adjusted properly, this baby is ready to go!

Very nice work. I have a 2230 I'm tempted to at least partially re-cap. I did a 2220B and due to ignorance, snapped off the leads of almost unobtainable biasing diode. That has kept me leery of power boards. Any such concerns with the 2230 with 2 power boards?

Edit: Where and what physical size did you get the main caps?
 
Ditto on what caps you used for the filter and ouput caps?
Nice fit.

On my 2230 I used wima's for c751 and 753 on the amp boards.
Seemed to sound better to me.

Very underrated receiver. It's got a captivating sound that is hard to describe but keeps you hooked.

There's a bias diode screwed to each heatsink on the 2230. Just remove the little clamp, and it's free. I didn't have any issues with them.

Why not increase the value of the coupling caps?
I did that with the 1060 I was working on, increased the low bass right and proper.

Trust me, it is not underrated. :) It is the most appreciated and popular Marantz of them all - and by far, too. :)

Jeremy, I'm sure with Kyle's work it will sound better than new. As for thanks, thank you for having the desire to bring it back to its true form. That's thanks enough.
 
I'm still concerned about the 160V caps, it seems that there would be a benefit from increasing the value vs the voltage...

They were what Mouser had in stock for 35mm snap in caps close to the value I needed. The 160V caps are not any worse as far as ESR is concerned. There's no point stepping up to 2700uF, and 4700uF is taking the unit away from what the original designers intended. I think they deserve some credit for knowing what they were doing.

I really haven't found that the 2230 needs much help in the bass department.

I don't think it was a design decision to make the sound better. I have two theories:

1. They used smaller caps to make the unit sound worse, so that they wouldn't compete with themselves (you want better sound quality - get a more expensive model).

2. Price. Bigger caps were too expensive to put in a cheap model. Using bigger caps would have put the price too close to the bigger models.

Can we see that in slow motion next time. I love seeing the before and after of the finished boards...very clean work. Not at all like the 'typical' repair shop around the corner. Oh yah. I forgot...they went out of business several years ago.
My 2245 has been asking for a refresh; but, I haven't quite found the courage to dive into it yet. Never mind the Soundcraftsmen I picked up recently.
