I just saw this:

Joe Zawinul Hospitalized in Vienna

VIENNA, Austria -- Joe Zawinul, who performed and recorded with Miles Davis, has been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness, officials said Tuesday.

Zawinul, 75, was admitted to Vienna's Wilhelmina Clinic on Sunday, the Viennese Hospital Association said.

The group declined to confirm reports by Austrian public broadcaster ORF that Zawinul was seriously ill, saying the musician had requested that his rights as a patient and a private person be respected.

Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Davis albums such as "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew." He was a leading force behind the so-called "Electric Jazz" movement.

In 1970, he founded the band Weather Report and produced a series of albums including "Heavy Weather," "Black Market" and "I Sing the Body Electric." After that band's breakup, he founded the Zawinul Syndicate in 1987.

Zawinul is credited with bringing the electric piano and synthesizer into the jazz mainstream.

This past spring, he toured Europe to mark the 20th anniversary of the Zawinul Syndicate. He sought medical attention when the tour ended, the Hospital Association said.

His record label, BirdJAM, said there was no word on whether he planned to go ahead with concerts scheduled for next month.

Yes, a prayer for Joe and a speedy recovery. Joe's work with early Weather Report is of course outstanding. My personal favorite work of Joe's is from a bit earlier in his career:

Joe Zawinul & Ben Webster Quintet - Soulmates (Riverside RLP 476)

Recorded in NYC, October 14, 1963

Ben Webster - tenor sax
Joe Zawinul - piano
Thad Jones - cornet
Sam Jones - bass
Philly Joe Jones - drums

Man --- sorry to hear this. Joe you get strong. All they have to do is plug him into some intravenous "Dialects" --- man that would get him tapping his foot again. Everybody check out that CD --- wow!

He has been doing music 50+ years. Hats off to the guy.
