Johnny Cash recommendations?

I've always liked Johnny Cash but own none of his music. My Dad was a fan BITD. When I was a kid I remember riding with him in one of his Cadillac convertibles on some of his business trips and he would play several Johnny Cash 8 tracks over and over. Lots of memories when I hear his music.

Anyway, looking for 4-5 vinyl and/or CD recommendations to add to my library?

Hey Stoutblock, this question came up a while back, so you might try a search. I'd go with a 3 CD collection called "The Essential Johnny Cash 1955 - 1983", and on vinyl "Johnny Cash with his Hot and Blue Guitar", and "The Fabulous Johnny Cash".

The Folsom and San Quentin prison albums are both Cash at his live best. The Cash Unearthed box set is great stuff, as well.

There is a Bear Family import cd I believe called Up Through the Years that has a nice collection of his early stuff. Very good sounding, as all Bear Family discs seem to be.

Another excellent compilation is "The Essential Johnny Cash", released by Song/BMG in 2002. It omits any mention of the Rick Rubin-produced American Recordings series, but otherwise provides a nice overview of Cash from his start at Sun Records and continues on through the end of his time at Columbia.

His son John Carter Cash just released some "previously unreleased" material on an album called Johnny Cash Out Among The Stars.

I was surprisingly pleased with the CD.

Maybe not the best starter Cash, but worth picking up on down the road.

One of my favorites is Ride This Train, especially if you like storytelling songs.

Johnny 99 probably gets more play here than any other.

There's about to be a new vinyl compilation that has the older stuff + selected tracks from the American Recordings era. I bought a 7" from it the other day just for fun.

Great interaction with the audience at Folsom Prison. It's so Johnny.

I don't know what album you would find it on but I love his version of "City of New Orleans". It's perfect with his voice.

I picked up the Legend box set for now. It seems to be a great start...

I have most all of j.c. Albums or cd from almost all of his labels he recorded on. I enjoy his American series the best by Rick Rubin. RCA killed Cash with all their overproduced string section. Rick Rubin's are cash as he was meant to be!

I pre-ordered the Vinyl from Amazon. I was very pleased with the pressing.

It's not my favorite Cash album, but it's up there. Just goes to show you that you can't rely on the critics that said it was not good enough for release in the 80's. I happen to like it very much and that is all that counts with music.

Johnny had a knack for covering a song and making it his own. So many examples where I like his version better than the original.

I plan on picking these up also because they seem to be highly recommended. How many did they make in the American series?
