JRiver beginner difficulties

I paid for Jriver and run it from a laptop that feeds a DAC that is connected to my main music system in my Man Cave. The source is a Symbology NAS connected to my router. I suspect I missed some steps on setup. I've imported all music from the NAS to Jriver. All my music is in albums on the NAS.
When I search for an artist in JRiver I get multiple choises. XXX XXX(album,artist) XXX XXX(artist) and possibly a few more catagories. And that's ok. But I am wanting to play the whole album. A lot of time the list of songs it gives me to play is incomplete. Maybe just one song or maybe half the album is missing. I suspect I didn't really want to go with such a complex piece of software as Jriver but I'm not ready to quit yet.
Can anyone please give me a simple answer or answers on how to get the whole album. I'm willing to get rid of all I have imported into Jriver, or learn a new way of finding my music(by artist name).
I would also not mind searching under broad genres like Folk, Rock, Jazz, Classical. But it has who knows how many different sub genres under each of the broad genres. (Folk, Antartic) (Folk,Drunk) (Folk,Skinny Female) ETC.

I really don't think you imported your music into JRiver, JRiver is just looking at it on your NAS.

Can you shoot a screenshot of what your file set up on the NAS looks like.

I will need to go downstairs and look at the import setting on my old JRiver set up later and then I might be able to help you.

Make sure your header choices look something like this to start.

With Name, Artist & Album selected.

I had a revelation of sorts last night about Jriver. All the sorting and categories used in Jriver is driven by the metadata that is attached to each file(I think). I'll have to do more research on metadata but up to now I've largely ignored it. The music files in my collection come from a lot of different places. Files ripped from LP's and CD's by a number of different softwares. Albums copied and downloaded from here, there and everywhere. If this is true I'll need to rethink my commitment to Jriver. I am not about to change the metadata and Jriver tags for a large portion of my collection.

I used JRiver and was happy with it until I discovered ROON. Most of my music at the time was from my own rips on iTunes and the metadata was pretty good.

That being said it did have some issues with Compilations and recordings that had several different artists.

Sounds like you may be missing some metadata, especially for the LP rips. CD rips should have their metadata but that does depend on what software was used and how it was configured.

That's unfortunate because JRiver, Roon and other music management software packages rely heavily on the metadata. It allows you to rank, sort and classify your music which helps when you want to develop playlists to focus on a particular artist or genre of music. It's too bad that your digital collection is missing that info but it can be recaptured with some work by you on your music repository. Yup, it means either re-ripping the CD's and/or manually updating/renaming/adding data to the LP rips. Without consistent metadata the software won't have clear information to sort and show all songs from a particular artist, LP or CD. Been There, Done That....

A significant portion of my digital music collection comes from CD rips or from digital downloads. When ripping CD's having a good ripping software package will insure all your metadata is preserved and available.

Yeah, metadata is a huge thing if you’re doing the digital boogie.

I can make a mistake and slip while ripping a Son House CD, and whatever playback program I use doesn’t know that the genre should be ‘Blues’ and NOT ‘Booty Bass’.
Such is life. Tags are a thing.

"Tags are a thing" And can't be taken lightly I see. Deleted my libraries. Went into Import options and set Genre to Folk. Now just importing my Folk folder from the NAS,

jRiver allows you to import your library and then lookup all the tags from the internet. All it needs is a correct title, artist, and track name. This will change the tags in the files, so maybe not an option for you. The lookup feature uses a jRiver user database, but also goes to FreeDB if there's a problem or rare cut. It also finds cover art if available.

I don't have a NAS, my library is on external USB drive. What I do is have a top level folder on the USB drive. Then subfolders with genre. Top folder MyMusic. Sub Folders Rock, Jazz, Surf etc.
Surf music may be tagged with different genres from the net. So by putting into a subfolder it is easy to create a Surf playlist. This of course works for any genre that you choose.

In JRiver I create a smartlist . I give it the name Surf Smartlist. In it I tell it Filename (path) starts with (here the path to the subfolder is nominated) . This is all done with dropdowns by the editor.
