Julian Hirsch's Favorite Speakers

These have one of the two most bizzarre driver configurations I have ever seen. The other one is a pair of Infinity WTLC speakers - Walsh tweeter on top, with both front and rear firing mids and bass. The "grill" is more like a hood that goes all the way around, and over top. My brother has had them since the late '70s and they still sound great to this day.

I guess a lot of odd configurations are more of a gimmick, but in cases like these, there is some serious acoustic engineering behind them!

That auction has been relisted probably half a dozen times. When it first came up, I got ahold of the seller and after I was able to pick through his abrasive reply, I learned that it's for a single speaker. Seriously, the seller chose the absolute minimum number of words with the maximum attitude. I'd swear he doesn't want to sell the speaker.

As to Julian Hirsch, he said he refused to review equipment he didn't like in the first place; so you can draw the conclusion that if it wasn't reviewed, he either didn't like it or didn't hear it. Years after the initial D-12 and D-6 reviews, SR reviewed the D-12A and fondly recalled the original D-12 saying that it's held its own quite well and was still the better speaker. It's easy to draw the conclusion that the D-6 is considered on par or better. Hirsch was not alone, either, the other magazine, Hi-Fidelity, reviewed this speaker quite favorably considering their more mellow tone of writing.

Just for the record, though the D-6s are bookshelf like, they are designed as omnidirectional speakers and behave nearly as such. Kind of hard to compare them to more beamy, typical designs.

Good or bad, they're still fun to have if only for the oddness. Besides, these are in particularly good condition and pretty good looking to boot, once the grills are put back on.

Oh yeah, I gathered it was one speaker from the get-go. And, yes, it is hammered. It reminds me of Jeff Foxworthy talking about redneck yard sales. "What are those?" "Oh, those are old Tupperware lids warped from the dishwasher. 20 cents a piece." "Shoot, what would anybody want them for? I'll give you a buck for eight of 'em."
