Jumped in BIG....found a Marantz 2500.

'Press on, Winterbottom....Press on'!:D If something is odd, don't hesitate to ask here. No worries here.

One BIG error I found was the transformer winding that provides +/-40v, 180v and 576v supplies. There are more. It took me awhile to figure that out until I finally pulled the board out of my 2500 and it matches my theory as shown HERE.

EW....I can find the Huntington enamel 25 ohm/25 watt resistor....would this be okay to use in the softstart application? The 'wattage' is slightly higher than the manual suggests(20w).........and the ohms is a bit higher too(22 ohms).......would this be okay?

Thanks............

EW....ok.....just confirming....you know 'suspenders AND belt'! ;-)

I have ordered a few parts already.........the EBM fan just jumped 20bucks in pricing today(DK)..........now, I just need to figure out the wiring...and the caps....and the tr's....and..and..yikes....should be fun.
Got hold of a printed manual from Rick(stereomanuals)......it is on the way.

I have been searching the 'net for a good picture of the innards of an original Euro 2500.
This so I can see the connection wiring for the fan/softstart resistor assembly. I found the picture below.....in Japan/Korea....I think....can anyone with a Euro 2500 confirm...thanks......

Fascinating shot there. Looks like not only a custom wound replacement toroid, but a replacement of the unobtainable dual-core filter caps as well. I thought the transformer looked a bit small, but then I noticed that the scope tube was removed - apparently the high voltage winding was omitted in the custom tranny. AM antenna is zip-tied as well - probably broken. Obviously a total "basket-case" 2500 that somebody REALLY wanted to resurrect!!

skibjr....yes the unit is in bad shape...the poster actually had 2 2500's that he resurrected.........the fan/softstart resistor area is the place of interest for me...........I have just seen so many funky solutions in that area.....................EW's being non-funky and pro-lookin'!

The primary wiring as shown in the service manual will get the job done for you...provided that there are no mistakes (and if there are, hopefully you will recognize them). It will be a matter of tracing wires from point to point and verifying that they are routed as the manual shows. It isn't terribly hard, but it IS time consuming and headache-inducing. Keep a bottle a Bayer handy.

Looked like a reasonably tidy repair and replacement, scope notwithstanding. Probably could rig up a small HV transformer for that if it was needed. At least it looks a lot better from a cosmetic standpoint than the C-E core custom replacement that was seen from Australia or NZ - that was effective but rather "brute ugly" IMHO. But it worked.

The Dual Cap repair is also reasonably tidy. I wonder if one could make a good replacement outer can (instead of gutting a perfectly good capacitor), with a custom 3 leg top and some plastic sleeving to look like a cap? Hmmm. Lots of work...

I have begun making an order for DK/Mouser..........the fan.....I just need confirmation that it is a 115ac powered fan in my multi-voltage unit too......can someone confirm, before I send of the order.............thanks.
I expect to install a brand new EBM-Papst 4606z..............115ac............

Regarding the 1.4A fuses........I could only find 20mm SLO-BLO fuses..........would these be ok....they seem pretty good, and they could go in my order from DK.........................................

I have checked the manual.............no real info........

Follow the wiring on the fan...on a 220~230V setup, I believe the fan runs off of half of the primary transformer...essentially using the other primary winding as a bucking transformer.

As far as the fuse, never replace a fast-blo with a slo-blo. If you can't find a 1.4A fuse, use a 1.5A. I can't think of a scenario where that last 100mA is going to make any difference. A 1.4A slo-blo would be a much more dangerous choice than staying with a fast-blo that is rated for another 100mA.

EW...ok...so, a 115vac fan is good...? I don't want to get it wrong, because the fan costs 55bucks......! In the manual, it says the M001(fan) is the same for the US as the MV-Euro version...............page 45 of the SM. I'll get the 1.5A fast-blo fuses.......and keep searching for the 1.4A's.

I am travelling at the moment , so I cant make any measurements or anything......................

Thanks again EW.....................

What are the chances that the softstart relay is toast? I would like to get hold of a brand new one.........is Fujitsu the only maker of such relays?

Any info is good.................thanks.

Statistics class was a long time ago, so predicting probabilities is not my strong suit. But...relay coils rarely fail, so the important part is the condition of the contacts. Carefully pop off the cover and take a look if you are so inclined.

Yes, only Fujistu made a relay with this footprint.

Thanks EW...I'll check the relay. Did you see my confirmation question in post 32 regarding the fan? I just don't want to throw +50bucks out the window on the wrong fan. The SM isn't much help........no voltages.

Maybe someone with a multi-voltage 2500 could check their fan spec's....? That would be great..........

I have been looking at some tr and zener/diode sub's for the 2500......

I couldn't find a good sub for a 2sb647 and a wz071 zener.....................can someone suggest a couple? Thanks............

2SA1220/KSA1220 will sub. The zener is a 7.1V 500mW. I would not know where to find a replacement for that...standard sizes go from 6.8V to 7.5V with nothing in between.

got some parts for the 2500 restore..........fan/softstart resistors, new EBM fan, new main outputs(MJ's).......big box of caps.........
