Just a little venting

If you had a tractor, you would not feel that way. They're like freaking Swiss Army Knives.
:)

(Full disclosure: I don't have one -- but I have access to a nice, mid-sized 4wd Kubota. 1000s of uses around the home and farm!)

My father still has a lot of John Deere tractors that are pretty much antiques by now, but are still in service! Pretty sure he has a B (or two?), a 40, 60, 70, and probably one or two more that are that old. Especially in a winter like this, there are plenty of things to do with a tractor :)

I have been interested in audio since the early 90s and I know just enough to be dangerous and some times it’s not a good thing In passed years I was able to pick gear cheap and people couldn’t get this stuff away, I’d fix it listen For a while and sell or trade or even give it away and believe me I could never ever make a profit but I made a lot of friends that was cool that’s what I enjoyed it . Its cool now and in Vogue it seems that Basic economics and greed has seemed to get in the way it’s hard to buy stuff and it seems that Transactions are more of a business deal then making new friends and talking about audio and helping out . I get the eBay thing (supply and demand .) but the Facebook stuff not cool just my opinion.

I haven't used Facebook too much, but have had a couple of good experiences. Went to buy 1 set of speakers from a guy -- was an older guy who had his house packed with speakers and amplifiers everywhere (his GF wasn't happy, he said!). Ended up getting 3 sets of speakers and may go back to get some Kef References when I can afford them.

Another guy was moving to Asia so he could be closer to Nepal during the climbing season (I guess he was a semi-pro) and he was selling off his audio stuff. Had a lot of gear and was a interesting story as well.

Hoping that things go back a bit more to normal this year as it would be great to be able to just hang out with people, listen to music and have a beer or two!

Cool deere's, I'd buy one, but my yard is only abut 65' × 100' and my neighbors already think I'm crazy..
They'd have me committed.. :jump:

I score stuff on facebook all the time.
I just don't post everything i find
Here is an example of one big find lately :
$5 bucks for everything .The person selling was transitioning to a minimalist lifestyle .

We have our local flippers that scarf up the low priced items and re-sell them on other sites. Facebook Marketplace has taken the #1 spot over CL, OfferUp, Varage Sale, Next Door. I've bought my last 6 pairs of speakers on there.

I have had good luck everytime on most of those sites.

Edit: a little due diligence

I am Anti Social......media.

I did Facebook a few years back and found a lot of people I hadn't been in contact with for 10, 15 years........after a few weeks I realized why and deleted my account.

Keep an eye out for Audiokarma gatherings near you when things get back to normal. We've been having one here in Massachusetts for the past 10 years or-so. Nice folks, some of them just selling off stuff from their closets for little money.

You might also consider subscribing to AK, it's only $20 a year, it helps pay the bills to keep the light on, and gives you access to Barter Town, the AK selling forum. You may not always find tag sale prices there, but you'll find desirable gear, well represented at reasonable prices. If you go to the forum main page, you'll see a red subscribe button.

I don't know how long it has been since I saw a piece of vintage equipment in Goodwill, or a flea market. I have asked at some places, and most of them say some guy is first in the door every day and goes straight to the electronics. He buys it for pennies, sells it to a pawn shop for dollars, and the pawn shop tries to sell it to us for 10s and 100s of dollars. Bunch of crap.

Can someone please define "Hipster" for an old guy that has been away from the USA for a long time?

Cheers,
James

Oh hipsters are here in Germany, believe me. Here you find them riding Triumph Bonnevilles (the modern ones) and the like, wearing Canadian lumberjack shirts, jeans and fitting classical boots (Thinking about it they look like me on my Guzzi...).

Unfortunately anything with a vintage tag on it now is considered cool no matter what it is driving prices up. I did receive a good deal on a social site and the guy was nice enough to Throw in a pre amp. I figured he would feel bad if he threw it out so he just gave it to me. I have had it since last summer and finallyhooked it up. Sounds great but probably needs alittle cleaning but it’s going to pay for the thorens turntable.

OMG! I wear Canadian lumberjack shirts, jeans and Lineman boots. But I'm not at all hip, just an old guy that likes the Blues wearing the same thing that I've worn since the '70s, and I sold my MC in 1990. That's all there is to it?

Cheers,
James
