Wow, that's a beautiful table - congrats! It looks almost identical to a TP-80SA that I had but sold a couple of years ago. Some Sanyo turntables were built in Japan by CEC (a good thing). They're generally well built and quite reliable. I never put my 80SA into my rotation (at the time, I had something like 8 turntables and something had to go). I regret selling that one though, along with a Sanyo TP-825D. So, can't help you much with the cartridge question.

Have you checked vinylengine for a manual? You'd probably do best with a cartridge with a stylus that isn't too compliant. Without knowing the specs, the arm is probably in that nice "medium" side of heavy range and should play nice with any number of cartridges, either recent or more vintage.

Wait (brainfreeze earlier). Are you reading the model number correctly? I bet the "5" is actually an "S". That would explain why it looks like a TP-80SA!

I just checked vinylengine. They have the service manual for a TP-80S (probably close enough for our purposes) but no owner's manual.

Do a search function for the 80SA here on AK. I know that there have been posts about it, maybe there will be some cartridge suggestions in one of them. I think you'll like that turntable! What cartridge is on it now?

im already LOVING IT! Right now its got a Pioneer cartridge with a Ortofon FF15xe MKii. im sure it can do better than that! only thing im trying to figure out is this little wobbly piece of metal near the back, doesnt seem to do anything although it must have a purpose? I forgot to mention, it came with a receiver as well - a Sanyo DCX3330KA.

That's the antiskating mechanism. You'll need to move the arm, and position it as shown in this picture:

That looks nice.

...and it's pretty, as well.

I have an 825D

TOTALLY under rated table.

People like to scoff at the Sanyo name, but it plays as good as much more highly regarded tables.

im honestly thinking of switching out my main (Bang and olufsen RX-2) with this!

just made this adjustment - thank you!

There might be gradations on the antiskate lever to help set the level. I'm trying to remember what mine looked like. When you move the weight fore and aft, does it seem to "click" into place every now and then?

I sold my TP-85D to a young kid making his first turntable purchase ever. Almost immediately, he affectionately nicknamed it the "green beast" because of the color of the plinth and the weight!

That's actually an excellent cartridge, rivalling many expensive modern ones. Do you have any provenance on the stylus?

Actually your headshell is Pioneer. The cartridge is Ortofon.
