Just got me a pair of Polk 7B - One of them doesn't sound right

Wow extremely graphical, thanks. Now cleaning this up might be hard or is it just a screw? Well I'll take a look anyway! Interesting! I tried the cable-bridge in this speaker by the way and made no difference.

Polk made it very difficult to get to the leads coming off the fuse block. You have to drill out the rivet on the block to remove it. You also have take the crossover board off the standoffs, then use denatured alcohol to soften and remove the glue covering everything to get to the connections. Basically, a royal PITA.

I don't think that is your major issue though. Seems you have a bad tweeter first and foremost.

BTW, that's not a woofer, it's a passive radiator.

Oops! Passive Radiator. I'm such a noob with speakers. Thanks for the info!

Yeah it seems quite an accomplished task to take that fuse block out, tried briefly but couldn't do it. Time to stop. I'll now take the speaker to the expert, can't do much more myself without risk.
And you're right it seems that while the fuse was bad and there may be some problem there, there's work to do in the tweeter itself. I'll go for that now.

Before you take it to anyone swap the known good tweeter with the questionable one to see if the problem follows the questionable one.

Now for a happy ending, the speaker has just returned from the service, and it's working PERFECTLY! Thanks everyone for the great help and insights (learned a lot). Not sure what the problem was, couldn't talk with the guy today, something related to the crossovers, but not sure what. I know they kept it in an original state and that they did a lot of cleaning. HAPPY!

Just a note....

I had a set of 7B's and a set of 7A's. Both had original peerless tweeters and were visually identical excepting for some slight differences in the passive radiator (PR). I believe the depth of the cone and the size of the center weight of the PR differ between the A's and B's. Having said that, Polk made production changes throughout each run and as such not all B's are identical and not all A's are identical. My 7A's had a single fuse for only the tweeter just like my B's. I understand that some (earlier) 7A's might have had a second fuse for the mid-woofer. I believe there was a Monitor 7 without the A, B, or C designation too, but the Polk experts can correct me where I'm wrong.

Polk still sells drivers and a good new replacement tweeter is available from them. Check on the Polk site forums for more information as to suitability based on the particular cross-over version in your polk model. For some models this new replacement is a drop-in. For others it might require some cross-over changes.

These are very nice speakers and before I got my vintage KLH Sixes these were my favorites.

Greenflash,
You live in Argentina am I correct?
Do you live close to the ocean?
When I lived in Florida my last seven years before I moved to New Mexico We lived right on the coast, in fact the Gulf was in my backyard.
It wreaked havoc on all my electronics, fender guitar tube amps, my beloved Sansui AU-9500 along with my AR-1's. this powdery looking stuff looks familiar along with the rusting screws.
Just a thought..

Oh good tip; I live not so close to the coast but well this a humid state in general. However I've just got the speakers a couple days ago. The seller messaged me today to tell me about some Wharfedale Tsr 110 which are not working well either. So I guess his house might be specially humid. Yeah the screws are quite telling. That didn't happen in my other speakers. Thank God I got a good repair shop close to home!

I think I had original 7s w/ the Peerless tweeters. When I got mine it looked like a dog chewed on some of the corners and one driver was bad but being a member of club Polk got that covered. As for the corners I used these decorated corners from Home Depot $4 a set. After that the faux rosewood cabinets looked great as was the sound. I've since sold them to downsize but I know why all the Polkies think the Monitor 7s are the sweet spot of the line. Seen here far left no other shots left of cabinets.IMG_3733.JPG

Cool Tom I'll have to sell another pair eventually too. Maybe my Infinities sm125. They take up too much space and are mint. I need to consider in the meantime to stack the 7s with a pair of Infinities 3000p.. also looking at your setup I need to think of some feet for the new boys.

Greenflash,

Apologies as I've just seen this post. The exact same thing happened to my Polk 7Bs. I fixed the tweeter issue by simply replacing the fuses located above the rear speaker wire binding posts.

You can test this by swapping the two fuses between the speakers and seeing if the muffled channel also swaps sides.

If you still have the speakers and this problem, I hope this helps.

No problem :) I sent the speaker to an expert and he fixed it.. Somehow I didn't test them right and now I connected them to a Marantz 140 and they sounded great. But the other speaker failed a bit and just touching the fuse it would work.
