Just picked up a Dual 1219 with Shure V5 type III and VM35SH

Hi All

Just landed a fully functional Dual 1219 with Shure V15 type III with VM35SH stylus with original dust cover for $150.00 at a Thrift / Consignment shop. Got it home and fired it up Sounds pretty good in comparison to my existing Technics SL-3300 with AT VM95ML. Anything I should do to make sure it is performing optimally?

I assume based on reading the the Dual 1219 is a much better TT than my existing SL-3300, correct?

I do not. The dual will probably need lube work to be it's best but it's a real cool idler. I just picked up another 1019.
 
Be careful with that dust cover. The way it's made it can crack at the rear if you open it too far or the rear stop bar gets messed up some.
 
Not enough being said here about that cartridge…. The Shure V15 Type III is a real sought-after vintage cart. Definitely a keeper, and worthy of a quality replacement stylus, if needed. You won’t find a new modern cartridge that even comes close to it for that price, so don’t balk at a $150 - $300 dollar aftermarket or O.E.M. stylus for it, if it needs it.

Over at vinylengine.com there's some good downloadable service guides for these kind of dual idlers. I suggest becoming a member of you not already are, and study these.
The most important thing to have knowledge of on a 1219 is the vulnerable dearing ring which can cripple the tonearm. Read up on this by using the search box here. Until then, don't touch the single/multiplay switch!

Otherwise if it works, enjoy for a while and don't fix stuff that aren't broken.

When you've done some reading and feel ready you can start a careful servicing. I would start with cleaning and relubricate the motor, idler and platter bearings. If the auto functions work, leave that more complicated stuff for a while.

That was a good buy OP. Years ago I sold a V15 type 3 for $150. Should have kept it. Fast forward, five years ago I picked up several Garrard Zero 100s and a 92 to learn how to service them. One Zero came with a V15 type 3 for the price sum of $23. Felt it was toonice for the Garrard. It now lives on my first 1219 pictured <<. Have Jico elliptical on it. As suggested above Duals should have the old grease removed and regressed. The motors should opened up,cleaned oiled. Once serviced they run a long time. The one pictured here was done 8 yrs ago. After 4 years the motor started chattering. Took it apart, cleaned and oiled again. This time the whole time was 20 minutes. Came apart easily as I had it apart once. Have not touched it since. Enjoy!

The Shure V15 caught my eye immediately. I'm sure the tt is worthy on it's own with a proper clean and lubrication. As someone else mentioned spend some money on a stylus and that cartridge is TOTL and highly sought after. Congratulations on the purchase!

Thanks for the advice. I think I will have it serviced and based on other posts have the Rubber Sleeve and Bearings replaced if needed. Thanks again.

Sold the things new. Have the base of one on my latest Dual, a 1229. Stuck on mine with super glue! Yech.
